{Drawing of woman wearing mortar board driving away, under a tree} Full Speed Ahead A safe successful drive can be yours with effort and determination, and you'll soon have friends to accompany you. Of course, college has a deeper meaning that a route or a journey. The objectives and decisions made here will influence a larger expanse of ground than can be found within the boundaries of Iowa City. But the elements that go into skillfully following your chosen path-the competence and dedication that are needed for personal satisfaction-are gained only through faithful concentration, thorough studying of the map before accelerating, and genuine respect for other travelers. These are more than surface qualities-and they are all a part of Route 66. From your four years at Iowa you will have learned much; you will have profited from your own experiences and those of others in classroom relationships, over a cup of coffee, and during your participation in extracurricular activities. Every effort you will have made adds to your growth, and you will have discovered that being a student is what you ware willing to put into it. Not everyone is able to travel in all of the directions talked about here. For some, getting good grades is a full-time job. Others may feel they would rather participate in a few activities and be content with average grades. These decisions and discoveries about yourself are a very large part of your growth during your college years. College is a personal experience, comprised of the courses, the activities, the friends, the social life, and the knowledge you choose to pursue. Just as each face on the campus is unique, so is each college career. Let it be a time of personal fulfillment and worthwhile progress, 23
