To Guide You in Iowa City and on Campus.. Like the University, Iowa City is growing rapidly. Including the student population of over 18,000, Iowa City is composed of 43,000 people. Federal highways 6 and 218 junction in Iowa City, and Interstate 80 has four Iowa City exits. The Rock Island Railroad serves the city, and one national airline operates out of the Iowa City airport. Just twenty miles northwest of Iowa City, Cedar Rapids offers expanded air service. Iowa City merchants cater to you. Three local banks are prepared to handle your banking concerns. Department stores and numerous drug stores carry your everyday needs. Many apparel shops carry clothes to suit your tastes. Four bookstores are located on Clinton Street, Iowa City's "main street." The Pentacrest is just a few blocks south of your dorm on Clinton Street. Surrounding Old Capitol, the administrative center of the University, are four liberal arts buildings: Schaeffer Hall, Macbride Hall, University Hall, and the Mathematics Building. Once the home of the state government, Old Capitol symbolizes the U of I and is a living monument to the students who have studied here since 1847. To the west of the Pentacrest, across the Iowa River on the hill, are the University Hospitals, the Student Health Center, and the Law Building. Near the men's dormitories are located the Hawkeye Football Stadium and the Field House. On the river bank and the Art Building and the University Theatre. Back across the river, via the footbridge, is the Iowa Memorial Union. Walking east you will find the Women's Gym, Calvin Hall, Gilmore Hall, the parking ramp, and the Chemistry and Dental Buildings. Continuing, you will see the Business Administration Building across from the Pentacrest. The Zoology Building is in the same block. The Center of Speech Pathology, the Psychology Department, and the College of Education are in East Hall, two blocks east from the Pentacrest. Nearby are the Music Building and the Physics Research Center. Situated south of the Pentacrest are the Engineering Building, Communications Building, the Main Library, and the English-Philosophy Building. At first glance the U of I campus appears puzzling. Soon it will take on a familiar pattern that is life at Iowa. 7
