High scholarship is coveted and rewarded by honorary societies which encourage the coed in her endeavors toward higher education. Good work starting in your freshman year and continued high scholarship are necessary if you are to join these honoraries either later this year or as an upper-classman. As a freshman, you may receive an invitation to join Alpha Lambda Delta, freshman women's honorary, which confers membership on those attaining a 3.5 grade average or better during one of their first two semesters at the U of I. High scholarship, leadership, and service to the University make you a candidate for Mortar Board, national honorary society for senior women. Being elected to Mortar Board is the climax of three years' college work. Five to twenty-five junior women are tapped by the outgoing chapter to carry on the Mortar Board tradition. Membership is an honor and a responsibility. Mortar Board presents Graduate Study Night and the "Smarty Party." Graduate Study Night explores the possibilities and processes for entrance to graduate school. In the spring, Mortar Board recognizes coeds entrance to graduate school. In the spring, Mortar Board recognizes coeds with a 3.25 grade average or above by inviting them to "Smarty Party." A Mortar Board white blazer is a symbol of an outstanding woman on the U of I campus. The ultimate goal of second-semester senior women is membership in Phi Beta Kappa. This honorary initiates liberal arts students who rank scholastically in the top 10 per cent of the senior class. A Phi Beta Kappa key is a prized possession of men and women the world over as representative of high academic achievement. Most departments and major fields at the U of I reward excellent performance and outstanding work among undergraduate women with membership in honorary groups in the following areas: 13
