City Lights You'll find Iowa City a small college town which will soon be home to you. It is located on the Iowa River in the southeastern corner of the state. Transportation facilities include federal highways 218 and 6, the Rock Island Railroad, the Greyhound Bus Lines, and the United Air Lines which makes regular stops at the Iowa City Municipal Airport. The University campus is in the middle of town. Old Capitol is one of the central points of interest. You'll find the University Library and the Iowa Memorial Union on the east bank of the river. Just a few blocks from the central campus is Currier Hall, the largest women's residence hall. Several of the sorority houses are near Currier, and the others are slightly farther from the main campus. Crossing the river, you'll find such points of interest as the University Theatre, the Fine Arts Building, and the University Hospitals. Directly across from the campus is the Iowa City business district ready to supply you with everything you need during the school year. Among its facilties you'll find large department stores, small apparel shops, student supply stores, restaurants, drug stores, dry cleaners, and self service laundries. Handling money is always something of a problem when you first come to college. Either of the two local banks will be happy to open an account for you if you wish to deposit your money in Iowa City, and most stores will cash small checks written on your home bank if you present your student identification card. You'll find that eating meals at the dorm, buying your books second-hand, and walking when possible will keep your expenses down to a minimum. If you need transportation facilities, there is a local bus line with moderate rates and convenient routes. The entertainment facilities that Iowa City offers may tempt you to forsake your studies occasionally. There are five theaters giving you a wide choice of movies to attend. If your interests center in athletic activities, you will want to take advantage of the bowling alleys, the roller skating rink, the tennis courts, the golf course, or a canoe trip on the Iowa River. Tandem bike riding and picnics are activities on sunny spring days. It's easy to find your way around in Iowa City. You'll be a part of the college community sooner than you can imagine. 6
