Highlights "Participation in extracurricular activities is half the value of college to a student," declare the personnel directors of industry. Through outside interests, you take part in activities which may or may not be connected with your major. Activities broaden your education, and also acquaint you with people you might not otherwise meet. There are so many activities open to you at SUI, that you may find it difficult to limit yourself to just a few at the beginning. Doing outstanding work in a single activity is certainly more important than merely holding a membership card to several clubs. Campus leaders are those people who have achieved good grades along with a reputation of being dependable in their responsibilities. Part-time employment would limit your time for committee meetings, of course. For any girl, though, the wisest policy is first to adjust to college life and studies, then investigate more numerous outside activities. Attend the open house for all campus organizations in the Main Lounge of the Union on Wednesday, September 19, to become acquainted with the opportunities at SUI. Later, watch The Daily Iowan for more imformation concerning functions of various groups that particularly interest you. Pep and Spirit [hand drawing of girl and boy] SUI The Hawk-I Pep Club forms a special student cheering section at Iowa's home football games. Their additional activities include preparing pep rallies, planning out-of-town trips, sponsoring post-game parties, and making the Herky mascot costume. Work on sub-committees is a necessary prerequisite for application for the next year's Pep Club Council. Tryouts are conducted each spring for positions on the cheer-leading team. Cheerleaders perform at football and basketball games, both home and away. They also lead pep rallies and help with festivities for Homecoming weekend. An equal number of boys and girls are chosen as cheerleaders. 18
