AWS The Associated Women Students is an organization to which every undergraduate woman belongs. It is a member of the Intercollegiate Association of Women Students, which has affiliates throughout the United States. This organization acts as a coordinator for all women's groups on campus. You're sure to find an activity suited to your abilities and interests in the AWS program. AWS is directed by a General Council composed of the elected officers and the chairmen of the various committees, and a representative from each of the following housing groups: the Panhellenic Association, the women's residence halls, and Independent Town Women. Miss Helen E. Focht, Counselor to Women, is the AWS adviser. This year's officers are Margie Rickett, president; Connie Dolezal, vice-president; Marian Freed, secretary; Sandy Swengel, treasurer; and Marcia Koch, sophomore representative. The application system is used in selecting the committee members and the chairmen of the various committees. These applications are available throughout the year. Girls are chosen on the basis of their interest, enthusiasm, and dependability. As you fill out applications, remember to complete the application carefully, and to be sincere in your remarks. Be sure to apply more than once for positions. Although you may not be chosen the very first time you apply, your interest will be remembered. Application forms are avialable in the Office of Student Affairs in University Hall, and in the various housing units. You'll want to sign up for an AWS new student interview either at the Activities Open House during New Student Week or at the AWS Open House which is scheduled for Thursday, September 27. A member of AWS Council will interview you to help you choose the activities which best suit you and in which you are most interested. Freshman Council—Fifteen to twenty freshman girls are chosen each year, on the basis of their high school activities and potential leadership to compose this group. Freshman Council takes an active part in AWS in addition to sponsoring many of its own projects, such as parties at the Hospital School for Severely Handicapped Children. High School Contact—This committee works with SUI's High School Service in giving information about the University to interested high school students. University Sing—This group organizes the University Song Fest, one of the highlights of the Mother's Day weekend. A chorus from each housing unit may enter the competition, and the finalists present a concert for the visiting mothers. This provides a fitting close to the Mother's Day Weekend. 22
