Guiding Light An important part of college life is worship. College often presents new situations and ideas, and students frequently need help thinking things through. Your spiritual growth is an important part of your college growth. Iowa City churches welcome college students to their services and to their youth groups which offer both social and religious activities. Churches also encourage interested students to sing in their choirs and to teach Sunday School. [hand drawing of girl] The following church groups are active in Iowa City: Bethany Baptist student group, Canterbury Club (Episcopal), Christian Science Student Society, Disciples Student Fellowship (Christian Church), Fireside Club (Unitarian), Friends Meeting (Quaker), Gamma Delta (Missouri Synod Lutheran Students), Hillel Foundation (Jewish Student Center), Iowa Christian Fellowship (Interdenominational), Kappa Phi (Methodist Sorority) Latter Day Saints, Lutheran Student Association, Nazarene Young People's Society, Newman Club (Catholic), Roger Williams Fellowship (Baptist), United Student Fellowship (Congregational and Evangelical Reformed), Wesley Foundation (Methodist) and Westminster Fellowship (Presbyterian). Each Protestant group chooses two representatives to the Student Christian Council, a group which acts as a coordinator for the various organizations. The Council sponsors Religion in Life Week each year and brings in worthwhile speakers for lectures, seminars, and conferences. Danforth Chapel, located on campus near your classes, conducts short prayer services each weekday afternoon. Begin your year by going to church regularly and participating in your church group's activities. Regular worship will be a valuable part of your college life, and will make it more meaningful. 30
