[emblem] ON STAGE... IOWA CITY TONIGHT ONLY SMASH HIT Viewing the Stage At SUI the stage is many things. It is the campus, as you walk from "cokes" at the Union to your class in Schaeffer Hall. It is the Union, as you attend one of the Friday night dances. it is the town, as you go shopping. It is all these, and more. Whichever set happens to be on the stage at the moment, this is your home, your school–this is SUI. Let's take a vantage point in a mythical "first row balcony" seat. As the stage below revolves we can catch a preview of what you'll come to know so well during your four years at the University. First we see a panoramic view of Iowa City. It is located on the Iowa River where highways 218 and 6 meet, in the southeastern corner of the state. The Rock Island Railroad, the Greyhound Bus Lines, and United Air Lines make regular stops. In the heart of town are five buildings, with Old Capitol in the center, that form the main University campus. Not far away are the University Library and the Iowa Memorial Union, on the east bank of the river, and the University Theatre, Art Building, and the University Hospitals, on the west side. Currier Hall, largest women's residence hall is only a few blocks from Old Capitol, while The Commons, a smaller dorm, is on the west side of the river. Several of the sorority houses lie within a five-minute walk of the campus. The lights dim, then come on again. Here is the Iowa City business district. Whether you need to buy a textbook, have a sweater cleaned, or merely want to go on a shopping spree you'll find good stores, restaurants, laundries, and dry cleaners. Although handling money is always somewhat of a chore when you first come to college, either of the two local banks will be happy to open an account for you. Most stores will cash small checks written on your home town bank, if you present your student identification card. Our last view brings into focus the many recreational facilities that are offered by the University and the city. The centrally-located Union is a wonderful place for parties and dances, or to meet friends between classes in the congenial atmosphere of the Gold Feather Room. Theaters, bowling alleys, tennis courts, golf courses, the roller skating rink, bike riding, picnics, and canoeing on the river offer opportunities for a wholesome social life that will provide a definite "extra" to lIfe at the University. 4
