The Commons is located on a hillside, west of the Iowa River. About 160 girls live there enjoying facilities similar to those at Currier Hall. Residents live in suites with the study area in one room and the sleeping area in an adjoining room. Next to their lounge is the dining room where all meals are served cafeteria style. The laundry area has automatic washers, a dryer, and the necessary provisions for ironing. Girls in each unit and their adviser share the dormitory activities as at Currier. All Freshmen who are sorority pledges live in University residence halls or in approved private homes. Temporary housing at Currier is provided for upperclassmen planning to pledge during Rush Week, and they can then move into the chapter house. Off-campus housing is much like dorrmitory living on a miniature scale, for the furnishings are similar and the same University regulations apply as for all other undergraduate women. Each householder is responsible for the girls in her home. There is staff member in the Office of Student Affairs who has special interest in the town housing. The Independent Town Women's organization meets once every two weeks for programs covering every interest, from fashions to living in foreign countries. Events with the Independent Town Men's organization are regularly planned for fun and frivolity. During Orientation Week the two organizations give a mixer and a buffet supper for newcomers. Later in the year the social highlight is their dazzling Winter Formal. Pack up for SUI's stage and make yourself at home on the new set.
