[hand drawing] Heralding the new year is the Panhellenic-Interfraternity Formal, at which Duke Ellington played for dancing last winter. Fraternity pledges and their dates cance through an evening at the Interfraternity Pledge Prom. The distinctive Military Ball finds the ROTC men arrayed in full military dress for the occasion. The Honorary Cadet Colonel, a Senior woman chosen by the men in ROTC for her beauty and academic achievement, and her attendants are introduced during intermission. Just before the Mecca Ball, engineering students shave the beards they grow to commemorate St. Patrick's Day. Students with an MD in their future remove the stethoscopes long enough to attend their annual dance, the Aesculapian Frolic, while law students step out from courtroom scenes for an evening at the Barrister's Ball. Dental students know they won't hurt their patients at the Apollonian Frolic, and the little pink pills are shelved during the Pharmacy Prize Prom. In addition to being the setting for many of our dances, our informal social life centers around the Iowa Memorial Union, too. The older wing has a television room, the Main Lounge has comfortable divans and displays of art, and the River Room a juke box for dancing, facilities for banquets, Ping-pong tables, and a cafeferia. The newer addition includes even more for your pleasure withthe Gold Feather Room on the lower level, sixteen lanes for bowling, the billiards hall, a library, and a high-fidelity equipped, sound proof music room. There is also a modern lounge, air-cooled during warm weather, and many offices for University student organizations. Take a break and visit your Union. Meet your friends for a cup of coffee or for a few hands of bridge. Tickets for plays, concerts, lectures, and dances are secured at the Information Desk. 15
