Scottish Highlanders [hand drawing of person with drum] If you're looking for a strictly girls' organization here's your group. The 75 marching members of the State University of Iowa Scottish Highlanders have made a name for themselves and the University through the efforts of many extended tours and performances. The completely authentic garb and repertoire of the group makes them unique here at SUI. Besides blowing Scottish tunes on their bagpipes and beating rhythmic patterns on the drums they entertain by singing and dancing. Each fall. Director and Pipemaster William L. Adamson (known as "Bill" to the girls), selects a new group of members at special tryouts. Girls interested in this organization should keep their ears perked for an announcement of tryout times. Among the HIghlander trips have been the past two tours of Europe in 1952 and 1956. The third voyage abroad for the group will be in the summer of 1960, at which time they will entertain and sight-see in the British Isles, Scotland, France, Switzerland, Germany and Italy. While performing in the United States and Scotch-plaid clad lassies marched in the eight-mile Rose Bowl parade and the finals of the international Curling contests at Chicago in addition to other concerts and marching exhibitions. Hawk-I-Pep Club "Card trick number nine," and all heads down for another cheering section card display at the football games. The SUI Pep Club and cheerleaders, by their planned activities and gimmicks, invite that enthusiastic spirit at all the football and basketball games during the year. Each fall new cheerleaders and "Herky the Hawk" are chosen for the ensuing season of athletic events. Tryouts for these positions are conducted in the spring for those interested. 22
