Big Sisters Helping the severely handicapped children at the University Hospital can be as rewarding as it is fun for college coeds. You become a "big sister" to some little boy or girl and spend some of your free hours reading, playing , or just watching television together once a week. It is very satisfying and helpful experience to contribute your time in this way. The children are extremely happy to see you each time you go over to the hospitals and accept you as a real "big sister." AWS [hand drawing of cart] Associated Women Students is the largest activity group on the campus. Its membership includes all of the undergraduate women students, and its activities are many and varies. The Code for Coeds you now have in your hands is one of the eleven projects directly sponsored by the group. With a General Council of over twenty members representing the committees and freshman and sophomore classes, AWS organizes and carries out plans for its schedule of events. You are automatically, a member of this national organization and may participate in its projects. The purpose of AWS as enumerated in its constitution is that of promoting student service, unity, and leadership at the University. More specifically, the group tries to instill high scholarship, enrich students culturally, encourage student faculty relations, co-ordinate other women's organizations on campus , and recognize leadership among individual coeds. Each spring semester a slate of new officers is nominated, with selection taking place during the all-campus elections. The group is advised by Miss Helen E. Focht, Counselor to Women.
