purpose of these meetings is to give students interested in certain fields an opportunity to visit informally with representative faculty members. Refreshments are also served by the committee. Response to this program has been very good in the past; it hoped that it will prove to have continued success in the future. Spinster's Spree According to the calendar, leap year comes once every four years. AWS had improved on this by the introduction of an annual girl-bid dance. Spinster's Spree has drawn crowds of over fifteen hundred coeds and their dates each year. In conjunction with Central Part Committee, the girls on the dance program organize the intermission tea, select party favors, plan the entertainment, and do a masterful job of decorating the Main Lounge of the Iowa Memorial Union for the big spring event. Foreign Students A large university, such as Iowa, is host to many foreign students each year. AWS sees a need for making these students feel welcome on our campus. This committee works closely with the directors of the International Center and the members from different countries. Through this association and a planned program of activities, the Foreign Student Committee hopes to promote a better understanding between these students and those of our own United States. A special part of the year's events comes at Christmas time, with the presentation of a large International Festival . A number of smaller projects are also held throughout the year at the International Center. Included in these are dinners prepared by the students of various parts of the world. The menus for these dinners are representative of the students' countries. All students and faculty members are invited to attend at a minimal charge. Freshman Council As a freshman on campus, you are represented by the AWS Freshman Council, compose of girls selected on the basis of scholarship, high school activities, and potential leadership qualities. A girl is usually chosen from each of the women's housing units for membership on this council. The elected president of this group is then made an automatic representative to the AWS General Council. The freshman group discusses problems and plans projects concerning first year coeds on campus. 26
