THE KICKOFF [hand drawing of girl with father] The most crucial minutes in a game are often the first, for its during this time that the tone of the play is often set. One sure way to get off to a running start is to participate fully in the orientation activities that are planned for you. It is here that you will learn many things about your chosen school, not only the obvious facts but also those many little things which will all add up to give you the complete picture of college life. You will receive a letter during the summer months from your orientation leader. She will tell you what had been especially planned for your group. Consider this girl as a special friend in these first days of school. If you have questions on any phase of college life, drop her a note and she'll be glad to help you in any way possible. In your orientation letter you will receive a schedule of everything planned during this week. Participate as much as possible. You can pick up extra yardage in this preliminary practice, meet many of the people on your team, and acquaint yourself with the playing field. Orientation Week starts Sunday, September 20. After attending the church of your choice that morning, you can spend the afternoon unpacking, exploring the sights of Iowa City, or just loading and getting better acquainted with new faces around the dorm. Sunday at 7:00 p.m. is the required mass meeting in the Field House for all new students. Here you will join your orientation group for the first time and meet those who will engage in the planned activities with you for the next few days. At this meeting a special program is planned when activities of Orientation Week will be outlines. The casual clothes you wear to this meeting will be appropriate for your informal visit with one of the SUI faculty in his home. Carrying the conversational ball will be easy as you will run into no interference, just sincere hospitality. Monday evening President and Mrs. Hancher are having an open house for orientation groups 1-50. Dressed in your Sunday best, you will meet your group at designated time and place and go as a body to the president's home, where you will meet the Hanchers and other University administrators. You will enjoy the evening in this friendly setting. For those in orientation groups 51-100 the church youth groups of SUI will hold open houses Upperclassmen have returned to school early to welcome you to their church and explain their program areas. 8
