TOUCHDOWN Just as Randy Duncan was a standout on the Iowa football field last fall, so some students are standouts in the academic field each year. And similarly, just as Randy was awarded all-American honors. so you too can receive recognition for your scholastic accomplishments. SUI grades on a 4-point scale. That is, you receive 4 points for every hour of A, 3 for every hour of B and so on down the line. The freshman women who achieve 3,5 (B+) grade average or above are eligible to join the freshman honorary fraternity, Alpha Lambda Delta. This grade point must be ether at the end of the first semester or an accumulated average for the entire year. Either way, it is certainly an honor and should be the object of your efforts. Good work in your freshman year and continued high scholarship are necessary if you are to join other honoraries when you are an upperclassman. Your own department will undoubtedly have some such special group. Then there is the oldest of the honoraries, Phi Beta Kappa. This group invites those men and women to membership who, while in the second semester of their senior year. have accumulated high scholastic averages. Receiving the Phi Beta Kappa key is an honor that is recognized throughout the world, and it is truly deserved recognition for those who have set and maintained such high scholastic goals. Mortar Board is an organization composed of senior women outstanding in both scholarship and activities, who are chosen at the end of their junior year. To be selected for this group, a girl must have demonstrated leadership qualities in all phases of campus life. The members then function actively as a group during their senior year by sponsoring several activities, including DoNut day and Mother's Day Weekend. Mortar Board selects its new members in the annual tapping ceremony, one of the festivities of Mother's Day Weekend. Both the audience and the honorees are unaware who have been selected until the old members circulate through the crowd, placing their mortar boards on the newly chosen candidates. This is a proud and happy occasion - the Rose Bowl of the honors field. 12
