departments and colleges, and to see the educational opportunities available at SUI. The emphasis of the Old Gold Days weekend is on the educational aspects of the University. However, other events, such as Varsity Varieties are added to the program to give our visitors a cross sectional view of the creative and organizational abilities of the University students. The Varsity Varieties committee is composed of a general chairman and four other girls who are chairmen of various divisions of the program. These five girls work together to present the final show. During the last two years the program had consisted of preliminary and semi-final elminations prior to finals. Trophies and plaques are presented to the groups participating in the final show. The large groups are housing units which humorously over-dramatize college life. "Talent" - actual talent - entertains the audience in the form of small groups or individuals. Spinster's Spree Here at SUI it is believed and firmly supported by the college men that the coed should take advantage of an opportunity to ask her extra special guy for an evening out. And along with this opportunity she should assume the financial responsibility for the entertainment. So we have our Spinster's Spree each spring. This is a semiformal dance, co-sponsored by AWS and CPC and held in the Iowa Memorial Union. This year there was an added attraction. Starting the Monday before the dance was MERC Week (Men's Economic Recovery Week). It was Miss SUI Coed who took the initiative and did the asking for Coke and study dates. Planning decorations and intermission entertainment calls for a large number of eager, interested people. If you're willing to work, sign up at the AWS Open House. University Sing U-Sing is presented each year as the climax to the University Mother's Day Weekend, sponsored by Mortar Board. A chorus from each housing unit may enter a preliminary context, and the ten to twelve finalists present the Mother's Day concert. A group of judges, composed of music experts from all over that state, decide on which men's and women's group will be awarded first place in their respective field. The final decision awards the coveted sweepstakes trophy to one of these contenders. The U-Sing committee is responsible for planning this event, selecting judges for both the semifinals and finals., and seeing that those 27
