The next two nights will find you either attending the President's Open House or visiting the local church group of your choice. Whether you are scheduled to visit the President's home on a Monday or a Tuesday evening, be sure to don your Sunday best, as both President and Mrs. Hancher, plus numerous other University officials, will be on hand to greet you. On the alternate night, slip into more casual campus wear or an informal evening with members of the local church group of your choice, who will also be holding open house. Here upperclassmen will be on hand to greet you and explain their programs. You can make a start at making your mark on SUI by attending the Activities Open House Wednesday afternoon, September 20, in the Main Lounge of the Iowa Memorial Union. Representatives of every campus organization will be there to explain their groups' purposes and activities, and many of them will be ready to sign you up as a member. After you've toured the booths of the organizations, wander downstairs to the River Room where an informal dance will be in full swing until 4:30 p.m. You'll just have time to run back to the dorm and eat before the Orientation Recreation Night begins at 7:00 p.m. in the Field House. Recreation Night is aimed at you, and since this includes so many different interests, its activities are as varied as its participants. You'll be able to play basketball, volleyball, or swim; or if you're a natural spectator type, you can watch fencing, wrestling or swimming demonstrations. You'll also have another opportunity to get acquainted with other freshmen and transfers at a dance to be held in the North Gym. Wear Bermudas or slacks with comfort in mind, and remember to bring your own equipment (including bathing suit and cap if you plan on swimming). Classes start Thursday, September 21 at 7:30 a.m. but the impressive induction ceremony will begin at 9:25 a.m. on the West Approach of Old Capitol. One of SUI's oldest traditions the induction ceremony is a must for all SUIowans. A Friday evening Iowa Memorial Union open house, including dancing and tours, will wind up Orientation Week activities. Sponsored by Union Board, the informal gathering promotes more new acquaintances for you and gives you a picture of a building you'll be frequenting - the Union. Your questions will be answered during the week at an Information Booth set up north of Old Capitol, staffed by specially trained upperclassmen. If you already have questions, why not get a head start and dash off a note to your own orientation leader? If you haven't heard from her yet, you'll be getting a letter soon. Selected on the basis of interest and ability, this girl is most eager to help you in any way she can, so don't be shy about asking. SUI has prepared this week especially for you. Through its activities, you can build a firm foundation for your future experiences as an SUIowan. Take advantage of these opportunities for new friends and experiences - they'll all be part of the woman you will be in four years. 11
