When members of the University community act in such a way as to require the callihng of outside help to preserve order, they take control of the University away from that community and put it into the hands of the civil authorities. A minority on campus have forced this situation on us. Those arrested last night are now subject to civil authorities, and the disposition of the charges are beyond our control. Despite this, I have urged the presiding judge, in assessing sanctions, to make a distinction between those who protested in a non-violent way and those who protested violently. For the latter, I hold no brief. For the former, I urge that great weight be given to their rejection of violence.
