Bill of Rights UNIVERSITY OF IOWA STUDENT BILL OF RIGHTS Presented by the HAWKEYE STUDENT PARTY, FEB. 1967 1. The right of every person to be considered for admission to, and for available scholarships from the University without inquiry into the applicant's race, color, national origin, religious creed, or political beliefs. 2. The right of students to a clear and concise statement, before entering the University, of their contractual rights, obligations and responsibilities to educational and extra curricular activities and University housing. 3. The right of students to organize and join associations to promote their common interests. (a). The right of any student organization to enjoy recognition in all cases provided they comply with the regulations set forth by the Student Senate. (b). The right of such groups to examine and to discuss all questions of interest to them and to express opinions publicly or privately. (c). The right of Student organizations to invite and hear any person of their own choosing. (d). The right of Student groups to participate freely in both on and off-campus activities. (e). The right of recognized groups to use University facilities providing they comply with the routine procedures necessary for the orderly scheduling of facilities. (f). The right of recognized groups to raise funds and control and dispense of these funds as they choose. (g). The right of any student or student groups to disseminate literature anywhere on campus. 4. The right of every student to exercise his full rights as an American citizen in forming and participatin in campus, local, national, or international organizations for intellectual, religious, social, political, economic, or cultural purposes, and to publish and/or disseminate his view and those of his organization on or off-campus. 5. The right to establish and issue publications free of any censorship or other pressure aimed at controllin editorial policy, with free selection and removal of editorial staffs reserved solely to the organizations sponsoring the publication. 6. The right to maintain democratic Student Government with the right of recall. 7. The right, without penalty, of students to join or form Unions and enter into collective bargaining. 8. The right to petition proper channels for changes in curriculum or faculty. 9. The right to fair and impartial trial with all due process of the law in all disciplinary matters, with the right of appeal to a court of students and faculty. 10. The right of a student, penalized by civil authorities, not to be punished by the University when the institutional authority of the University duplicates the function of general laws. 11. The right of students to protection against unjust search and seizure. 12. The right of students to choose their own place of residence. 13. The right of any student or student group to call for a referendum according to procedures set forth by the Student Senate. 14. Enumeration of these rights shall not be construed as to nullify or limit in any way any other rights possessed by students. 15. University cannot put any indebtedness on a students U bill, other than those debts owed to the University itself. That is indebtedness owed to non-University [illegible] may not be billed to student's U-bill.
