"OUR LIBERTIES WE PRIZE AND OUR RIGHTS WE WILL MAINTAIN" CHESTER O. HOUGEN STATE REPRESENTATIVE Chairman, Legislative Research Committee 3215 WATERLOO ROAD CEDAR FALLS, IOWA House of Representatives STATE OF IOWA Sixtieth General Assembly STATE HOUSE Des Moines 19, Iowa October 21, 1965 COMMITTEES __________ PRINTING, Chairman AERONAUTICS CONSOLIDATION AND COORDINATION OF STATE GOVERNMENT JUDICIARY 1 PUBLIC HEALTH AND PHARMACY SCHOOLS, LIBRARIES, STATE EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTION TAX REVISION Dr. Howard R. Bowen The University of Iowa Iowa City, Iowa 52240 Dear Dr. Bowen: Thanks for your prompt response to my letter of October 16th. I am gratified that you are in general accord with my views. Pursuant to your suggestion, I have released my letter and also your response to our local editor, to which I assume you have no objection. I certainly have no objection to all of the publicity which my letter might be given. In the event that I did not make myself entirely clear, I certainly have no objection to the right of free speech. But I do object to the use of University facilities and grounds for the purpose of promoting mob action and disloyal propaganda. Nor do I object to the faculty members having the right to opinions and self expressions. But I do object to the use of our class rooms for the purpose of warping minds and influencing our students contrary to American principles, and particularly when faculty members express such views to mob groups on the campus. I know of several faculty members that are using our class rooms for this sole purpose. I have always been a firm believer in instructing our students in all forms of government and the economic and other facts existing under the various forms of government, but such instruction should be objective from every standpoint, and not for the purpose of socializing our government and imposing other radical ideas. Again thanking you, I am Very truly yours, Chester Hougen COH/eg
