Iowa Law School Continuing Legal Education to All Speakers of Iowa Law School Continuing Education Programs

TO ALL SPEAKERS OF IOWA LAW SCHOOL CONTINUING LEGAL EDUCATION PROGRAMS

We are pleased that you accepted our invitation to lecture at a Continuing Legal Educational program sponsored by the University of Iowa College of Law. The goal of our continuing legal education programs is to assist lawyers in their efforts to maintain and improve their competence and thereby maintain and improve the quality of legal services available to the public. The fact that you were invited to speak is indicative of our affirmative judgment concerning your expertness and your acceptance of the invitation is indicative of your dedication to the legal profession and to the public it serves.

Our effort is to design and execute programs of the highest possible quality and of sufficient diversity to meet the needs of all segments of the bar. Thus, our speakers are drawn from among the most qualified available persons -- practicing lawyers, judges and faculty members -- and a variety of programs are provided, some for newly admitted lawyers and others for more experienced lawyers, some for specialists and others for general practitioners, and some that cut across these lines. The goal remains constant -- high quality continuing legal education.

In achieving our goal, we believe certain things are necessary. Lawyers who take time off from busy practices to attend CLE programs are interested in learning the most they possibly can in the time available. Thus, our practice is to provide detailed outlines lawyers can use after the sessions to refresh their recollections and, if possible, as a source for additional self study. We urge all lecturers to prepare their oral presentations with care, concentrating their remarks on the subject assigned and keeping in mind the background and informational needs of the audience. An element of humor may be useful in maintaining the attention of an audience, but stories, jokes and other comments not germane to the subject assigned should be kept to a minimum. Ethnic, racial, religious, sexual and other similar references should be avoided. Such remarks can only detract from the educational experience and are inconsistent with the goals we all have -- to foster human dignity and mutual respect.
