UI CHARTER COMMITTEE ON HUMAN RIGHTS SEPTEMBER 19, 2006 MINUTES I. Introduction of committee members. II. Overview of the committee A. Vice President Jones provided information on the history and charge of this committee. B. Robin went over the rules, including the importance of maintaining confidentiality and remembering not to speak on behalf of the Committee to the press or other groups about discussions. Only the Chair or Vice President Jones should speak publicly on behalf of the committee. III. Old Business A. Coke is actively involved in discussion of human rights concerns with the University. Minutes of the July meeting have been requested but there has been no response. The 9/15 SAS letter to the President's office was read aloud. Robin asked that anybody interested in attending these meetings or the SAS meetings let her know. B. The One Community One Book Committee project was discussed and members were reminded of the reading by T.C. Boyle author of Tortilla Curtain, the book chosen by the committee. IV. Approval of minutes from the May meeting was deferred. V. Subcommittee Reports & Updates A. International Issues Subcommittee - no report B. Education Issues Subcommittee - Kit and Barbara discussed ideas from last year relating to working with the Rhetoric Department on a module relating to human rights.
