BUSINESS COMMUNITY RESPONSE TO STUDENT PROTEST The Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors wishes to express an understanding of the desire and basic problems behing recent demonstations and unrest. Whereas we do not unanimously agree with the students on all points of concern-we do support their right to dissent by demonstations in a non-violent manner. We approve of the proposed student canvass to discuss the war with businesses or town's people. We would also urge moderation on the part of Law enforcement officials in the performance of their duties in dealing with the non-violent or peaceful demonstrators. Independent of the Chamber of Commerce, a group of Iowa City businessman have agreed to show their support of student demonstations by making a sizeable, monetary contribution to the May Bail Fund. An example of such support, came from the owner of THINGS,& THINGS, & THINGS, who co-signed his name on the bail-bond release-thus allowing the release of those arrested on the Pentacrest early Friday morning. Recent meetings between the Iowa City businessman and student leaders, such as Roger Weingarten, have proved fruitful in this critical hour and will continue for the future.
