HOUSING SERVICES Approved Housing Single undergraduate students must live in University approved housing until the semester in which they become 21 years of age. University-approved housing includes University residence halls, fraternity and sorority houses, approved rooming houses, and parental residences. Freshman women may not live in sorority chapter houses. Failure or refusal to meet these requirements can result in cancellation of your registration. Fair Housing Policy It is the University's firm policy that University-approved housing must be rented to students on an individual basis, with out exclusion or discrimination for reasons of race, creed, color or national origin. Room assignments are made on a first come. first served basis, beginning with students already living in residence halls. Roommate requests are honored if possible. Food service begins the first day of registration. if not canceled by June 1 prior to the second year for which the student applies, an application for room and/or board in University residence halls becomes a legal contract, binding for the entire school year unless the student cancels his University registration before the end of the school year. Married Student Housing There are approximately 1,250 units of University-operated married student housing, including one and two bedroom units in the Parklawn and Hawkeye apartment complexes, and two bedroom units in temporary barracks. Students must be registered for at least 5 semester hours of coursework each semester to be eligible to rent married University student apartments. Fraternity and Sorority Houses Student Activities Center, Iowa Memorial Union Sixteen national social sororities and twenty national social fraternities have U of I chapter houses offering board-and-room accommodations for members. Each chapter house is supervised by a house mother. Freshman women may not live in sorority houses. Freshman men may, but if they've contracted for University housing they must honor those contracts. (See "Fraternities and Sororities") Students Activities Center, Iowa Memorial Union. The Off-Campus Housing Office provides listings of University approved housing for undergraduate students, and of rooms and apartments for married students and students over age 21. Undergraduate students under age 21 who wish to request special permission to live outside University approved housing should apply at this office. General housing information and reference on legal matters is also provided by this office. FINANCIAL SERVICES Business Office 4 Jessup Hall This is where you pay charges billed to your student University account. Your tuition and fees and your University residence hall or fraternity-sorority room and board charges are billed to your University account for payment in eight equal monthly installments over the school year. Specified instructional supplies and services provided by University departments may be charged to your University account at your request. (See "Master Charge" below.) You may make University account payments by mail, or in the Student Deposit box next to the Cashier's Window at the University Business Office, or directly at the Cashier's Window. University accounts are billed the first day of each month. A $5 penalty is assessed on bills not paid by the 12th of the month. If you don't pay a bill due on your University account by the 20th of the month, you may have your University registration canceled. The University Business Office accepts checks with the understanding that it will assess a $2 penalty if a check is dishonored by the bank on which it is drawn. Master Charge Effective at the beginning of the 1970 fall semester, a number of charges the Business Office formerly accepted for billing to University accounts no longer will be accepted, but may be billed to Master Charge accounts. this change was adopted to reduce the accounting load on the Business Office, and to eliminate the withholding of academic credits for nonpayment of bills not related to University academic requirements. Master Charge was selected because of its general use in Iowa. The University does not require any student to have a Master Charge account; it encourages cash payments. The University cannot open a Master Charge account for you, nor issue you a Master Charge credit card. If you want to open a Master Charge account, apply either to a source in your home community, or to the First National Bank, Hawkeye State Bank, or Iowa State Bank and Trust Company in Iowa City, or the Coralville Bank and Trust Company in Coralville Iowa Memorial Union food purchases - in the Wheel River and State Rooms - may be billed to either your University or your Master Charge account. If you wish to make any other non-cash purchases on the campus, you should inquire whether the purchase is chargeable to your University account or to Master Charge. Student Financial Aids 106 Old Dental Building This office administers scholarships, grants, long term educational and short term emergency loans, and a part time job placement service.
