Mountaineers Membership in the Iowa Mountaineers is open to students, as well as to staff and faculty personnel. Students without previous outdoor experience may apply for associate memberships. The club sponsors local hikes, horseback ridding, ice skating and clubhouse activities in season, arranges weekend hiking and climbing outings to state parks, offers a series of professional travel-adventure film lectures during fall and winter months, and sponsors August outings to outstanding mountain wilderness regions in the United States and other countries Rugby Club University men interested in playing rugby are encouraged to join the club and participate in its interschool meets. Sailing Club The Sailing Club offers instruction and opportunities for sailing at Lake Macbride. Members may use club sailboats at any time, provided a member with skipper classification is aboard. Members participate in various regattas on other campuses, through the club's affiliation with the Midwest Collegiate Sailing Association. Seals This is an honorary swimming club affiliated with the National Academy of Aquatic Arts. Members are selected during tryouts in the fall. Practices are conducted weekly. The year's activities conclude with a Mother's Day Weekend show featuring synchronized swimming. Ski Club Members have opportunities for instruction, skiing and fellowship. They make trips to nearby ski slopes during the winter, and participate in various social activities the rest of the year. Soccer University men interested in active participation in soccer competition are invited to join the Iowa Infernoes. RECREATION FACILITIES Fieldhouse Archery: 10-point range, Jogging: 1/8 mile track, Badminton: 23 courts, Swimming: Olympic-size pool, Basketball: nine courts, Table Tennis, Gold: indoor practice facility, Weight training, Handball and paddleball: 16 courts Recreation Building Badminton: 10 courts, Pocket billiards: eight tables, Bumper pool: two tables, Tennis: six courts, Jogging 1/8 mile track, Volleyball:eight courts. Iowa Memorial Union. Billiards: pocket and straight rail Bowling Crafts: ceramic, photo darkroom. jewelry, and painting/drawing facilities. Outdoor Facilities Archery: Macbride Field Campus range Boating: Lake Macbride, Coralville River, Iowa River Canoeing: Rentals at University Canoe House north of the Museum of Art Football: 10 intamural fields Gold: Special student rates on the University's 18-hole South Finkbine and 9-hole North Finkbine courses. Ice skating: a University rink is scheduled for completion this winter; City Park lagoon, weather permitting. Jogging: 1/4 mile track north of U of I Stadium Softball: six University diamonds: city parks Swimming: City and Mercer Park pools; Lake Macbride beach Picnicking: city parks, Lake Macbride- Coralville Reservoir area; Palisades Kepler State Park Tennis: 28 regulation courts east of Old Armory on east campus and south of U of I Stadium Trail riding, hay and sleigh rides: several stables in North Liberty Solon area Water skiing: Lake Macbride-Coralville Reservoir, Iowa River RECREATION LESSONS The Division of Recreational Services offers lessons in golf, tennis and swimming. Lessons are available to all family members of the University community. Campus Leadership groups OMICRON DELTA KAPPA (ODK) This national society recognizes male upperclassmen for scholarship and leadership. Members are selected each spring, and are "tapped" at the annual leadership banquet sponsored by ODK. MORTAR BOARD The University of Iowa chapter of this national honor society for senior women recognizes outstanding leadership scholarship and service. Selected as juniors, Mortar Board members continue to serve in meeting special campus needs and providing effective leadership. College and Departmental Organizations Membership in all-college associations and department clubs is automatic for all students enrolled in the sponsoring colleges and departments. Membership in professional and recognition organizations is by invitation, based on coursework completed and academic standing. Membership in honor societies is by election, based on scholarship and professional interest.
