INDIA STUDENT ASSOCIATION This organization seeks to foster better understanding between India and the United States by helping new students from India, and interpreting aspects of Indian life. Membership is open to all University students and staff members. Music Performance in large ensembles is open to non-music majors, as well as to music majors.. Participants may receive academic credit for their participation. Auditions for large ensembles are conducted each registration period. To schedule an audition contact the office of the ensemble in which you are interested. For further information consult the Music Office, 110 Music Building. UNIVERSITY BANDS Frank Piersol, director 15 Music Building The Hawkeye Marching Band appears at all home football games and at one out-of-town game each season; a national television appearance is frequently a highlight of the season, The Symphony Band presents formal concerts on campus and on tour, and performs a repertoire selected from the finest compositions in band literature. The Hawkeye Concert Band presents formal concerts on campus, and provides the nucleus for the Pep Band, which performs at basketball games. Stage Band and Jazz Workshop participants study and perform the various styles, phrasings, and concepts of the jazz idiom; their repertoire includes student arrangements and compositions. UNIVERSITY SYMPHONY AND CHAMBER ORCHESTRAS James Dixon, conductor 119 Eastlawn The Symphony Orchestra presents five concerts each year, plus Christmas and spring concerts with the U of I Chorus; Orchestra rehearsals are Tuesday and Thursday evenings. The Chamber Orchestra studies music scored from small orchestra, reads manuscripts by students, accompanies soloists, and provides a laboratory for practice in conducting. UNIVERSITY ORATORIO CHORUS CHOIR Daniel Moe, director 108 Eastlawn The 200-voice Oratorio Chorus presents three formal concerts each year, including Christmas and spring concert with the University Symphony Orchestra. No previous experience is necessary for Chorus membership. Rehearsals Tuesday and Thursday evenings. The 60-voice University Choir presents a number of concerts on and off campus and makes an annual concert tour. It rehearses from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. daily. OPERA WORKSHOP Herald Stark, director 103 Music Building Students interested in studying opera and operatic singing participate in workshops and periodically present selections from opera scores. Full productions are performed during the school year and in the summer. COLLEGIUM MUSICUM Robert Donington, Richard Bloesch and Edward Kottick, directors 108-109 Eastlawn Collegium Musicum offers singers and instrumentalists opportunities to perform old and unusual music. Two programs are presented each year. Rehearsals are at 7:10 p,m Monday. OLD GOLD SINGERS Iowa Memorial Union Only non-music majors are eligible for the Old Gold Singers, a 32 voice chorus whose primary function is entertainment. The Singers perform a varied repertoire of Broadway show hits, popular ballads, folk songs, and spirituals, in frequent appearances on campus and throughout the state. SCOTTISH HIGHLANDERS Iowa Memorial Union The internationally known Highlanders comprise bagpipe and drum units whose membership is open to all women students. Political/Social Action Groups UNIVERSITY OF IOWA YOUNG DEMOCRATS Designed to foster and perpetuate Democratic party ideas, the Young Democrats sponsor a variety of political activities during this year. UNIVERSITY OF IOWA YOUNG REPUBLICANS The U of I branch of the Republican party, the Young Republicans' purpose is to attract and train sound party leadership. YOUNG AMERICANS FOR FREEDOM This club aims to provide a source of conservative political information and education, and a vehicle for conservative political action. STUDENTS FOR A DEMOCRATIC SOCIETY The SDS seeks effective action oriented toward vital issues of the day. Religious Organizations Iowa City churches and synagogues, and student religious groups connected with them, are an important part of students' out of class programs. In addition, several inter-religious ecumenical and non-denominational student organizations offer opportunities for students to participate in broadly based religious activities. A booklet "Religious Opportunities at the University of Iowa," is available from the School of Religion INTER-VARSITY CHRISTIAN FELLOWSHIP This inter-denominational student group meets weekly in sessions emphasizing Bible study, fellowship and prayer. Retreats, discussions, and social activities are a regular part of its program. CAMPUS CRUSADE FOR CHRIST The program of this inter-denominational organization is based on action groups, college life meetings, teaching, and prayer meetings. 12
