Service Organizations ALPHA PHI OMEGA This national fraternity's purpose is University and community service. To be eligible for membership, a student must have been a Boy Scout. AMERICAN FIELD SERVICE (AFS) The purpose of AFS is to facilitate the exchange of United States and foreign high school students. Its U of I chapter is open to men and women students interested in furthering the national organization's goals and in participating in related local activities, such as the Foreign Student Weekend for AFS exchange students in the Iowa City area. BIG SISTER/BIG BROTHER This program for severely handicapped children is sponsored by the University Hospital School recreation department. As a big brother or sister to a University Hospital school child, the student carries on a variety of activities with the child, depending on the child's physical limitations. PROJECT AID Project Aid sponsors fund raising projects to support University tuition scholarships for students in need of financial aid. Special Interest Groups AMATEUR RADIO CLUB This Club provides facilities and organizations for radio amateurs on the campus. Monthly meetings are held, and members may also operate from the club's radio room. CAMERA CLUB The Camera Club provides opportunities to develop skills in photographic arts, and seeks to stimulate interest in photography through bimonthly meetings and through exhibits of the work of members and of professional photographers. it sponsors an annual show of members' work. DAMES CLUB An organization of student wives, the U of I Dames Club sponsors a variety of programs and interest groups, including a fashion show and get-acquainted tea, and literary, creative crafts and bridge groups FOLKLORE CLUB The Folklore Club presents programs and concerts, provides banjo and guitar instruction, and sponsors workshops. IOWA SOCIETY OF INTERNATIONAL AND COMPARATIVE LAW This organization's purpose is to increase interest among U of I College of Law students, and in the University community generally, in understanding the many and varies aspects of international and comparative law. The society holds a variety of discussions and symposiums to promote its purposes. STUDENT ASSOCIATION FOR COMPUTING MACHINERY (SACM) The SACM was organized to help interested students increase their understanding of the computer field, particularly new developments. Any U of I student member of the National Association of Computing Machinery is eligible for SACM membership. Speech and Dramatic Art FORENSICS ASSOCIATION 224 Jessup Hall Debate and forensic activities are open to all regularly enrolled undergraduate students. No previous experience is necessary. Forensic activities have special value for students pursuing careers in teaching, law, and related fields. The Forensics Association program provides opportunities for speaking at public gatherings, as well as intercollegiate events throughout the country. Participants can become eligible for membership in Delta Sigma Rho, national honorary speech society. UNIVERSITY AND STUDIO THEATRES University Theatre All students are invited to participate in University and Studio Theatre activities, which offer experience in directing, acting, scene designing, lighting and costuming. A unit of the Fine Arts Center on the west ban of the river, the University Theatre is one of the most completely equipped theatres in the nation. Its production are selected form standard repertoire spanning all of the principal periods of Western dramatic literature. The flexibility of the Studio Theatre in Old Armory makes it an excellent facility for experimentation in staging techniques . Its program features the work of new playwrights and directors. Play tryouts are announced in The Daily Iowan and on University bulletin boards. Students can see from six to ten plays a year without charge. For reserved seats for all scheduled productions, present your Student Identification Card at the Iowa Memorial Union Box Office before each play. Student media STUDENT PUBLICATIONS, INCORPORATED (SPI) Five students, four faculty members, and a non-voting staff representative make up the SPI board of directors, which is the general administrative body for all recognized University student publications. Students elect student members of the board in the spring all-campus elections. Faculty members are appointed by the University president. The board decides policy questions for The Daily Iowan and Hawkeye and appoints their editors and business managers. THE DAILY IOWAN Communications Center Daily Iowan staff positions are open to all interested students. Interviews for selection of staff members are generally conducted in the spring, and are announced in advance via campus media. Published Tuesday through Saturday mornings, The Daily Iowan is recognized as a professional newspaper. It is a member of the Associated Press wire service, and has full wirephoto service. Residence unit subscriptions and included in your student fees. HAWKEYE 210 Communications Center Hawkeye is the University's student yearbook.
