FILMS AREA Films Area hopes to provide a program of films that are educational and entertaining, and to begin a special program of service to departments on campus, e.g. history, foreign language, political science, etc. Members of the Films Area are responsible for the selection, ordering, promotion, and presentation of a diversified repertoire of films. Members of this area are involved in the planning of special programs, and budgeting and organizing ticket sales for films FINE ARTS AREA This area aims to make Union Board an active sponsor of the arts on this campus, in part by becoming a more active sponsor of the art works of U of I students, graduate and undergraduate, and by increasing understanding of the fine arts through sponsorship of Thieves Market, art displays, the Union Craft Center, presentations, literary reading, publications, Classical Evenings and art rental. LEADERSHIP AREA Leadership is an internal service providing training for directors, chairmen, and members in the workings of committees, budgeting, programming, and in leadership qualities. It aims ultimately to improve the programming effectiveness of Union Board and to provide Union Board members with some knowledge of the skills necessary for effective group work in areas outside of Union Board PUBLIC RELATIONS AREA The basic aim of the Public Relations Area is to seek ways to aid and advise Union Board and others in obtaining effective promotion of their programs. Typical activities in this area might include publication of a calendar of all-University events. compilation and distribution of public relations handbook of tips on where a how to publicize events on and off campus, planning and sponsoring workshops aimed at helping Union Board further develop effective professional promotion of their programs, and providing direct promotional help to Union Board areas which request it. REFOCUS AREA As the largest student film festival in the world, Refocus expects to attract 30,000 viewers from all over the nation next year. Refocus members annually plan and present a week-long program of outstanding creative photography and cinematography, including works of University students as well as outside artists. RESEARCH AREA This area will pursue several avenues different from past Research Area groups. The evaluation of Union Board programs, which has been the Research Area's central function, is now being handled by a Research Programming Committee. The Study Groups Committee is planning several campus wide projects, including a number related to student housing and to establishment of a broader financial base for student activities. SPECIAL SERVICES AREA The aim of the Special Services Area is to provide service to Union Board and to the University through such activities as campus services, children's programming, Cocoa and Carols, Volunteer Service Bureau and service to other Union Board areas as requested Spring programming by this area will include such activities as organizing Love Sun Days. Special tasks, such as representing Union Board at registration, ticket taking at movies and providing special displays, are also performed by this area. TRAVEL AND RECREATION AREA The basic goal of this area is to provide travel advantages at minimum cost through the student union. Projects aimed at reaching this goal may be centered around providing such travel opportunities as two summer European charter flights, one from June 8- Sept 4 and one from July 25- Aug 25; a spring trip to the Bahamas; and U.S. travel throughout the year including a football migration to the Iowa-Minnesota football game and a Chicago shopping trip, (The Bahama trip is tentatively scheduled from March 26- April 4 1971; the cost, including round trip air fare from Chicago and room and board fees, will be approximately $200) This area also compiles an open file of up to date information of value to travelers. Travel and Recreation handles the sale of International Student IDs for those going abroad Finally, this area works with other Union Board areas to provide a program of informal outdoor recreation. Alumni Association Although the Alumni Association primarily serves University graduates it conducts several programs serving students. For example, it provides graduation announcements for seniors at cost. The Alumni Association works closely with University senior class presidents to provide an exchange of ideas between student leaders and the association staff. The association offices in the Memorial Union are open from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. daily; if you have any questions about the association's activities, a member of staff will welcome inquiry. And after you complete your course of study here, an Alumni Association membership will give you a continuous contact with the University. 15
