Hours for Guests BEGIN: Monday through Thursday 4:30 p.m. Friday 3:00 p.m. Saturday, Sunday and University holidays 10:00 a.m. Hours for callers END fifteen minutes before closing hours. B. PLACE OF ENTERTAINMENT. Entertainment of women guests in a men's residence shall be confined to the reception, dining, and recreation or lounge rooms of that residence. VII. Powers of Fraternity Governing Bodies The governing bodies of fraternities my make additional rules and regulations consistent with the provisions of the Code of Student Life. Any rules adopted by fraternity governing bodies shall become operative only after approval by the Committee on Student Life. VIII. Privilege of Appeal. Any fraternity of fraternity member has the privilege of appeal to the Dean of Students from any judgment rendered by a fraternity governing group. IX. New Fraternities A. No chapter of any fraternity not on campus during the school year 1942-43 may be organized without first securing approval of the Committee on Student Life B. Any new organization applying for recognition at The University of Iowa must show to the satisfaction of the Committee on Student life that it can, without question, exercise the right of freely selecting its members, using as criteria the merits of the individual person irrespective of race, color, or national origin. C. Any group of students desirous of organizing a new social fraternity shall petition the Committee on Student Life through the Office or Student Affairs for the privilege of a probationary period D. A probationary period shall be granted by the Committee on Student life if the Petitioners: 1. Have an alumni sponsoring committee of at least three persons, one of whom shall live in Iowa City or its vicinity. 2. Constitute a petitioning body of ten or more undergraduate members (if the fraternity is to be organized among students above the undergraduate level, this shall read graduate or professional students) , all of whom shall have a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.0, at least half of whom shall have a cumulative grade point average of not less than 2.5, and at least 15 per cent of whom shall have a cumulative grade point average of not less than 3.0 on all college work previously undertaken. Members of the petitioning body who are first semester freshmen must have been graduated in the upper one fourth of their high school class, [29]
