10-20 Youth Invade Office at Iowa U. Iowa City, Ia. (UPI) - Ten to 20 youths Thursday broke into the office of University of Iowa President Howard Bowen, committed acts of vandalism and then fled. Bowen was in Council Bluffs at the time for the meeting of the Board of Regents and his staff was not in the office. University officials said the incident was being investigated but names of the intruders were not known. Eyewitnesses said the invaders were white and black, males and females. The incident occurred during the noon hour while a rally of approximately 500 students was being held on the steps of the Old Capitol, Iowa U.'s administration building, to determine what further action students could take to protest an expected increase in tuition. After the incident in Bowen's office, speakers at the rally condemned the action. Outer doors of Old Capitol were locked and campus security guards were seen in large numbers in the area. Rain broke out during the outdoor rally early in the afternoon and it was moved to the terrace lounge of Iowa Memorial Union. A spokesman said the invaders entered the outer office and then "tore open the door to the inner office." Filing cabinets were overturned and some books were torn out of their cases. A spokesman said three filling cabinets were slightly dented and a flower pot was upset on a rug. Several small window panes were broken in the building. The youths were in the office less than 10 minutes. Students Vote Boycott Halt Iowa City, Ia. (UPI)- Students at the University of Iowa Thursday rejected by a 3-1 margin a proposal to continue the three-day-old boycott of classes staged to protest expected tuition increases. During a mass meeting on the Iowa campus, student leaders said 3,043 of the persons voting in the referendum were against continuing the boycott and 1,247 voted for the boycott. Presumably, the class boycott, which started Tuesday, will not be continued today. Negroes Lock Up Indiana U. Officials Bloomington, Ind. (AP) - About 100 Negro students locked an Indiana University meeting hall where negotiations over student demands were under way Thursday night and prevented any one from leaving or entering. The university new bureau said the acting chancellor of the school, Dr. John W. Snyder, and the vice president, David Derge, were among several administrators in the room. A spokesman for the Negro students said no one would leave or enter until university trustees came to the room to talk with students. Omaha World-Herald Omaha, Nebraska 5-9-69 Sunrise
