13 Boston Show, Week of Sept. 30, 1907. (Carl D. Lothrop) (Monday Sept. 30--Afternoon Show) Overture. 1.30, 9 min. Toledo & Prico. On at 1.39, 8 min, full stage; 3 shows. Can do a couple of minutes more if needed. Well known act that always makes good. They would be O.K. in this house at 2.30 and 8.30. If it was a European act and we saw it for the first time, most of us would consider it good value at 150. Diamond & Smith. On at 1.47, 18 min, in 1; 3 shows. Scored their usual success, with new songs and new pictures. I think their pictures the best they have ever had. Mr. & Mrs. Mark Murphy. On at 2.05, 16 min full stage, 5 min close in 1; 21 min in all. Although they went fairly well today, it seems to me it is about time "The Coal Strike" was called off. While Murphy always amuses me, I would like to see him try something new, for his sake as well as our sakes. Gardner & Stoddard. On at 2.26, 14 min full stage, close in 1 6 min; 20 min in all. Their close in 1 is by an advance arrangement made with them, and it handicaps them slightly. Still, the act did not make the impression that I thought it would, possibly on account of an audience which, although large, was very frosty. From the way they went today, I could not give them a better place on the bill. The Finneys. On at 2.46, 10 min, full stage. One of the best novelty acts in the business. While their feats in swimming do not call for great applause, still I know that the act is much talked about. Swor Bros. On at 2.56, 22 min, in 1. A corking good blackface act, one of the best. The comedian of the pair has the making of a crackajack monologist, I believe. The only criticism I can make on the act is that it possibly runs about four minutes too long. Salerno. On at 3.18, 17 min, full stage. Unquestionably one of the showiest juggling acts in the world. He is certainly a marvel. Thawed quits a bit of the icy reserve manifested by this afternoon's audience. Julius Tannen. On at 3.35, 23 min, in 1. Tannen has made himself a favorite in this house. Has considerable new material. One of our most valuable acts in 1, a fact which he himself is beginning to appreciate. Emmet Devoy and Co. On at 3.38, 26 min, full stage; special set. I believe this sketch will score anywhere, for it is bright, lively, novel, well acted and full of comedy. I think it will prove itself a hit during the week. Adeline Francis. On at 5.25, 11 min, in 1, 3 shows. Singing comedienne. She has a fairly good stage appearance, but her voice is not particularly pleasing. Cannot recommend her. Earle & Bartlett. On at 5.36, 15 min, full stage; 3 shows. A very good 3-show act. Would get by in an early spot in most of the small cities, Earle bring quite a clever Irish comedian. Cuts: Mr. & Mrs. Mark Murphy. Cut word "Rottenness". Use the word "winner" instead of "divil", in the phrase "divil among the women". Gardner & Stoddard. Cut out "Two good [reunons?]" squib. Business of scratching head. Miss Stoddard instructed to keep her dress down, so as not to make pantalettes so noticeable. Harry Bulger. Cut "Newport" verse and "affinity" verse. Comment. Despite Bulger's fall down as the headliner, the show is a good one, containing some extremely good acts, several of them new to Boston, and business should hold up.
