DECEMBER 9, 1907. PHILADELPHIA SHOW. C.E. BARNS. ELLEN RICHARDS, wire-act:- 7 min. F.S. 3 shows. On at 7:01. The girl is very pretty and makes a nice appearance on the tight wire. Does the regulation stunts, receiving a mild hand throughout, but making a good close. this is a good three-a-day wire novelty. LYONS & PARKER, Vocal, Music, & Dancing:- 17 min. in 1. Close in 3. 3 shows On at 7:08. Two boys, one a harpist and the other a dancer and singer. During the first half of the act the younger of the two appears in girl's costume, which does not deceive anyone, however. Sing solos and duets accompanied by the harp, and ge fairly good hand. The harp solos were well received. Closed strong for such an act, worthy of a good spot in the three-a-day section. WATSON & LITTLE, "A Matrimonial Bargain":- 18 min. F.S. 2 shows. On at 7:30 This is a neat little act, made up a matrimonial quarrel, interspersed with some very good vocal numbers. Miss Little has a sweet voice and makes a fetching appearance in a rich blue gown. Watson appears in costume of a Lieutenant. Went very strong. WILLIE WESTON:- 17 min. in 1. 2 shows. On at 7:48. Weston was quite ill and did not appear at the afternoon show, but went on later. Made a very good showing, if not, indeed, a hit. He could stand a strong spot on any bill with credit. LABAKANS:- 9-min. F.S. 2 shows. On at 8:05. This would make a good opener or even better if necessary to so place them. Two men and a dog, very cleverly trained. Do tumbling on the mat. The dog gets as many laughs as the comedians themselves. Good act. ANNA & EFFIE CONLEY:- 11 min. in 1. 2 shows. On at 8:14. Small advance hand. This is a nice little sister act. Both the girls are pretty, dress in good taste, with three changes of costume. Sing ballads pleasingly and dance well. Altogether a nice little act for early spot in two-a-day section. Start only fair, but closed well, with curtain call. Wm. H. THOMPSON & CO, "For Love's Sweet Sake":- 25 min. F. S. 2 shows. On at 8:25. This is a strong and well written sketch, even if it does not contain the "eternal feminine", at least not in the living person. The action turns upon a confession of defalcation which the confessor did not commit, in order to shield a fellow-clerk, who had married the girl whom the confessor loved. Thompson's work is strong, but that of Ince leaves something to be desired in forcefulness. The act commands close attention throughout. Closed with good hand and curtain calls. W. H. MACART:- 17 min. in 1. 2 shows. On at 8:50. Alternately caught on and lost his audience in the afternoon. Some of his jokes were old and others new, but the majority of them got only a mild simmer. The travesties were good for their kind, but the act did not seem to arouse much applause Closed with weak hand. As a single entertainer not in the same class as Willie Weston and cannot be depended upon to hold down a hard spot in a good show. In the evening when he was transferred to a less difficult spot, he won out much stronger. had for a long time. POTTERY-MAKING IN JAPAN:- Very interesting. THE BATHERS' RAGE:- Fairly good comedy. Altogether the KINETOGRAPH series is above the average. LORO & Payne:-12 min. 3 shows. On at 6:36. Put on in the last minute to fill in time. Good three-a-day act and went same as before. HAGAN & PRESTCOTT:- 13 min. in 1. 3 shows. On at 6:48. Man and woman, making good appearance. Line of talk is rather weak, but vocal work makes good. If these people exploited better line of talk, their act would be valuable. GENERAL REMARKS:-With some shifting and re-arrangement this bill plays off very well. The "Missouri Jury" was impanelled for fair on Monday after noon and would could gotten scarcely less applause out of them had we distributed hand-cuffs with the programs. However, in the evening, it pulled up stronger and somewhat lightened the hearts of the performers, so that they did better. On a whole, it is a good average bill, and just about suits this interregnum period between Thanksgiving and Christmas.
