175. (Carl D. Lothrop) Boston Show, Week of Jan. 13, 1908. (Monday Jan. 13--Afternoon show) Overture. 1.30, 9 min. Selections from "The Red Mill". The Trillers. On at 1.39, 15 min, full stage; 3 shows. Makers of rag pictures. this act is much above the average of 3-a-days, and it seems to me that it would do well in a fairly good spot in any of the smaller houses. Frances Knight. On at 1.54, 14 min, in 1; 3 shows. A pretty girl with an excellent voice, who works something on the style of Bessie Wynn, using a "plant" in a box. Her plant, by the way, is rather a clever chap, one of the best at his style of work that I have seen. This act could hold a much better place in this house, in fact Miss Knight would score at 2.30 and 8.30. She has improved since last here. Excellent value for the money. Kelly and Ashby. On at 2.08, 10 min, full stage. Well known comedy acrobatic act that has suffered considerably from imitators. In many cities they would be a big hit. Did very well here today. We could put them further down the bill with safety. Herbert Cyril. On at 2.18, 13 min, in 1. Repeated his last season's success. Another act that is worthy of a better spot. Has a couple of new songs. Foy and Clark. On at 2.31, 21 min, full stage. Playing "The Springs of Youth". Got scattered laughs through the act, with a big finish. Would not care to play them again, excepting in a brand-new vehicle. Kemp's "Tales of the Wild". On at 2.52, 19 min, in 1. Scored very strongly today. The pictures are simply marvellous. If Mrs. Kemp possessed one-half the ability as a lecturer that her husband has as an illustrator, it would add greatly to the strength of the act. However, in its present condition it scored an emphatic hit. McMahon and Chappelle. On at 3.11, 26 min, the first 18 of which is practically in 1. Can be credited with a hit, particularly McMahon and Chappelle's clever conversational bit, which caused much hearty laughter. The finish is good and fast, and took two calls. Carson and Willard. On at 3.37, 15 min, in 1. As usual, they brought us quite a quantity of new material. Held this spot with entire satisfaction, both to the audience and ourselves. Think the smaller cities would find her thoroughly all right. The Kramers. On at 5.15, 15 min; are working in 1 this week, although they prefer to open full stage and close in 1. Mother and daughter in a hodge-podge of singing and dancing, banjo and piano playing. The little girl is quite clever. Good value for the money. Cuts: Frances Knight. Instructed not to bring the American flag from beneath her dress; to work to her plant only, and to no one else in the audience. Kelly and Ashby. Instructed to omit business with nude statue. Also "Christmas presents" remark and business. Comment. The show played very well indeed, so well that there will be no change from the original arrangement. It seemed to give great satisfaction this afternoon, and received many favorable comments.
