JANUARY 27, 1908. PHILADELPHIA SHOW. C. E. BARNS. THREE NIGHTINGALES:- Vocalists:- 15 min. in 1. 3 shows. On at 7:07. Three children, two boys and a girl. Philadelphia act. Played here recently and made a much better impression then for the reason that to-day they introduced a beer-stein song with a simultation of drunkenness which is objectionable and was immediately cut. It is remarkable that people can be so short-sighted as to allow children to feature such a song, which fell dead. The little girl has a fine voice. The trio sings exceptionally well for such young performers, and make a good appearance. Closing hand was good. BLANCHE SLOAN, Ring-act:- 8 min. F.S. 3 shows. On at 7:22. This act in daring pretty nearly comes being the limit for a ring act. Miss Sloan is a pretty woman and makes a good appearance. The applause was very hearty and although the act is short, it pleased. The finishing hand was strong. LEON ROGEE, Imitator Mus. Instru:- 9 min. in 1. 2 shows. On at 7:30. This is a very interesting and skilful act. The imitations of bourbon, cornet, piccolo, 'cello and scientific whistling all went very well and received good applause. RAFFIN'S MONKEYS:- 18 min. F.S. 2 shows. On at 7:39. Same act as before practically, only better, because on the previous occasion Raffin had lost a couple of monkeys. On this visit he had the full compliment of eight or nine. Did the regulation barrel-jumping, trapeze work, tight-rope walking, etc, winding up with the disrobing act on the trapeze, and the high jump into a mat. Monkeys playing around the stage created a good deal of side laughter. The act is especially pleasing to the children. THE ASTRELLAS, S. & D.:- 14 min. in 2, close in 1. 2 shows. On at 7:57. Two young women and man. Started off with a song and dance which went by without a hand, the singing being very much off key. The dancing of the girls saves the act, for they cannot sing. Appear in two changes of costume, all pretty. Mild hand. Act cannot hold a very strong spot on the bill as it is of very uneven merit.- AGNES SCOTT & HORACE WRIGHT, "The Wall Between":- 25 min. F.S. 2 shows. On at 8:11. This is a very pretty love sketch. The audience liked it and gave it respectful attention throughout, with four curtain calls at the finish, which is quite a record for such an unpretentious act. The action deals with a flirtation over the garden wall by two young people, interspersing some bright talk and some good Irish songs, excellently rendered. This sketch would go well anywhere. It is clean, wholesome and tender, and has all the Laurajeanlieyans teary with sentimental ecstasy at the close. HAPPY JACK GARDNER, Blkface:- 14 min. in 1. 2 shows. On at 8:36. Advance hand. Well known act on the Circuit. Had a good line of material. The tuba solo at the finish is really very funny and makes a good exit.- KINETOGRAPH:- FASHIONABLE PARIS:- Very interesting film. THE SUBURBANITES:- Fairly good start but an excellent finish. INGENIOUS ALARM:- Good comedy film.- [???] BROTHERS, Gymnasts:- 9 min. F. S. 3 shows. This is an excellent acrobatic hand-balancing act, and is deserving of a good place on any bill. In our estimation it is as good as the Shenck Bros. at much less the money. Many of their feats were absolutely new and all were skilfully done, bringing good applause. Make a fine appearance in Greek athletic costume showing off their superb figures to advantage. Strong recommended. This is an excellent show with a strong comedy element. It was found necessary to transpose the MASON-KEELER sketch with the FOUR LUKENS in order to make the show end snappier and to give CLIFTON CRAWFORD a little more opportunity, as it is pretty hard for any laughing material to follow the "Here" sketch. We are booming WALLCE strong. and have every reason to look for good business this week.
