236 FEBRUARY 24, 1908. PHILADELPHIA SHOW. C.E. BARNS. BEN BEYER & BROTHERS, Bicyclists:-13 min. F.S. 3 shows. On at 7:07. This is an excellent opening act for any house. Beyer's works eccentric and the younger man straight, and their feats are skilful, winning good applause. Starts off the show in rapid fashion. The bicycle business is a little faded now, but with acts that are strong as this there is no fear of a good reception. SCOTT & WHALEY, Col. S. & D.:- 19 Min. in 1. 3 shows. On at 7:20. this is a good coon act, with some gairly good singing, some good comedy lines and lively dancing. One works straight and the other blackface eccentric. Closed fairly strong. THOSE FOUR GIRLS, S. & D.:- 12 min. in 2, close in 1. On at 7:39. Four quite pretty girls in three changes of costume. Singing is fairly good, the dancing evolutions pleased. Holds down an early spot in the two-a-day section very well indeed. Closing hand was fairly strong. DARRAS BROTHERS, Athletic:-10 min. F.S. On at 7:51. This is an excellent athletic act, rapid and finished. Both work in regulation French silk knee breeches and white vests. The head-to-head balancing was very expert. The balancing of the younger man on his head on the swinging trapeze bar is certainly wonderful and got very good applause. The finish with the ground tumbling got strong applause and curtain call. HERBERT CYRIL, "The London Johnny":- 11 min. in 1. 2 shows. On at 8:01. Advance hand. Second appearance in this house. Cyril has learned his American audiences better, and consequently has improved his act. Each song got good hand and two out of four being new, his own compositions. Good hand at finish. Think he will do very well with the evening audiences. WATERBURY BROS. & TENNY, "Harmony Island":- 27 min. F.S. close in 1. On at 8:12. Two work straight and the other blackface in an eccentric costume the coat of which is covered with medals. There is a good deal of comedy in the act and the musical work is up to the standard. This act can always hold a good spot on the bill. The close in one with the brass instruments got particularly good hand. PAULINETTI & PIQUO, Athletic:- 8 min. F.S. 2 shows. On at 8:39. (Substituted in place of Rice & Prevost)- This is a good act. One works in athletic costume, and the other as clown. The work of both is principally on the horizontal bar. Fairly strong applause throughout. Finishing feat was on the order of Blockson & Burns with the wire. Closed to good hand. DAVE LEWIS, Dutch comedians:- 20 min. in 1. On at 8:47. Fair degree of novelty in his material and well delivered. Got the interest of the crowd at once and held them throughout. Could hold down a strong spot on any bill JULIUS STEGER & COMPANY, "The Fifth Commandment":- 25 min. F.S. On at 9:07. Advance hand. Well known on the Circuit. Second appearance in this house, and made even a stronger impression than before. Steger's song was encored. The finish was very impressive, and won him four curtain calls. One of the best sketches in Vaudeville and well nigh perfection in development now. MILITARY TOURNAMENT AT SAUMNUR:- Very interesting military film. THE HEALYS, S. & D. & T.:- 14 min. in 2. e shows. On at 6:39. This is a very mediocre act which includes some parodies, some moderately amusing talk and some instrumental work on the piano that could only hold an obscure spot. Closed with small hand. WALTER DANIELS Impersonator:- 14 min. in 1. 3 shows. On at 6:53. Very good act and worthy of a good spot on any bill. Received considerable applause. Makes up on the stage and meanwhile gives some good explanatory lines. GENERAL REMARKS:- Everybody seems to be pleased with the show. It is a strong average bill with no disappointments although there is no distinct novelty or superlative feature to be played up strong, I think that it will bring the business this week.
