PHILADELPHIA B. F. KEITH'S JANUARY 19th, 20 BARBETTE - (8 mins.) Very good novelty wire and ring act. Man masquerading as a woman and the impersonation is a big surprise. LUBA MEROFF - (16 mins) - Singing and dancing novelty by two women and a man. Open with American songs and close with a Russian song and dance number, the latter getting a big round of applause. OWEN McGIVENEY in "Bill Sikes" - (17 mins.) Has played here several times and has always been a hit. The same this time, finishing to a big hand. MEHLINGER & MEYER - (9 mins.) (Second Week) - Owing to the illness of Meyer, Mehlinger went on alone at the matinee. Sang four songs and finished to a good hand. "ONCE UPON A TIME" - (27 mins.) One of the snappiest and most amusing musical comedies we have played, carrying six persons. Talk is bright and got a lot of laughs. Plenty of action. The principal comedian does especially well. Finished strong, taking several bows. "TOPICS OF THE DAY" - (5 mins.) - In order to gain time for a change "Topics" was moved into this position and as usual got as many laughs as some of the comedy acts, holding this spot fine. SHEILA TERRY & CO. in "Three's a Crowd" - (26 mins.) A beautiful act and excellently presented by Miss Terry and her two male assistants. A medley of singing and dancing with a little story and all presented in a classy manner. A big hit. MARIE CAHILL - (22 mins.) Her present act is better than the previous one and she was a bigger hit. Has a lot of good talk and songs, all new. Closed strong. WARD & VAN - (15 mins.) A big laughing hit in the next to closing spot with their comedy and instrumental music. Plenty of laughs. Closed strong. MONS. & MME. ALF W. LOYAL - (10 mins.) A good repeater here and did very well in the closing spot. GENERAL REMARKS - Another great show to follow last week. Opened in a blinding snowstorm to a capacity audience. Show got over fine and will improve. EDWARD E. FORD - (15 mins. in One) - Took the place of Mehlinger & Meyer at short notice and did very well in next to closing spot, but his place is earlier on the bill. Works in evening clothes and derives comedy from facial contortions which is very funny. Uses stories of light texture and closes with a war recitation. This is the first showing and he needs a few American ideas and better stories. Handles his material well, has good stage presence and should improve.
