70 CRITICISM OF SHOW. KEITH'S CHESTNUT ST. THEATRE, PHILA. MAY 23RD, 04 KLISWORTH & [JEANRE?]-15 mins.-C.D.F. in 2-Man and woman, instrumental music and singing. Play the bells, banjo, guitar and xylophone. Got by all right for an opening act. THE [SEYONS?]- 15 mins.-C.D.F. in 3-Man and woman, in a sketch "The Gas Man." Alleged comedy sketch. Does no harm in its position on the bill. There is a great deal of singing by both the man and woman. Acceptable time filler in the three-a-day section. WILSON & DAVIS-15 mins. in one-Two men, talking act on the style of Fields & Ward. All right in the three-a-day class. We have had them three times. Manage to get some laughs from a chilly audience. [LAVELLE?] & GRANT-12 mins.-C.D.F. in 3-Two men, acrobats and hand balancers. One poses in a temporary cabinet at the opening of the act. A very good three-a-day act of its kind. Their work was punctuated with applause. BERTHA ALLISON-12 mins. in one-Singing comedienne (?) She didn't like it because she had to work in one, and I believe has wired New York. Her straight singing is good. She has a good voice. Her talk and her comedy (?) could well be eliminated. She should confine herself to singing. Her songs received applause--but her talk was slangy and tiresome. [[Bracketed question marks are in original document]] BROWN & BARTOLETTI-14 mins.-Gar in 3-close in one-Man and woman, rapid fire singing and dancing act. 'Woman's dancing was a bit strong--a little too much "legs." Man does some talking that is good and it serves to fill in time while the woman changes to a short dress and does toe dancing. Close with a whirlwind dance in one. POETINGER SWEDISH LADIES' QUINTETTE--14 mins.-Spec. Set in 4-Five Swedish girls in native costume, offering native songs and dances. Here before. Good act. SEARL & VIOLET ALLEN-18 mins. in one-Man and woman, crazy talking sketch called "The Sign Painter." It's a good act, new, novel and entertaining. Out of the rut and original. Went well, with applause and seemed to please immensely. WARD & CURRAN-24 mins.-C.D.F. in 3-Close in one-Fourth time here. Too well known for comment. Always go well here, with many laughs and applause. CHAS. T. ALDRICH-20 Mins.-Gar. in 3-Spec. in 4-Had an awful time. Nothing seemed to go right, and he talked and found fault in front of the audience. He has an excellent act and will go well after this afternoon. Because he is headlined here, he seems to be a bit fresh. Maybe it will wear off. MOORE & LITTLEFIELD-Spec. in One & C.D.F. in 3-Man and woman, in their old act, well known on the circuit. Aldrich's setting does not give them much opportunity to work to the best advantage the opening of their act. However, they seemed to get by all right in a very hard spot, and probably did as well as when last here. TAFFARY'S DOGS-10 mins.-Gar. in 3-An excellent dog act--one that will draw the children and be talked about. Probably as good as the best. PRESS [KILDREDGE?]-18 mins. in one-Well known. Always goes very strong here, with liberal laughter and applause. WILLS & HASSAN-12 mins.-Pal. in 4-Two men, equilibrists and athletes. Very good act. BIOGRAPH-20 mins.-Sheet in one-Good selection. H. A. DANIELS.
