124 CRITICISM OF SHOW. KEITH'S NEW THEATRE, PHILA. AUG. 22ND. HERBERT-14 mins.-C.D.F. in 2-Magician. Man of ordinary ability. All old tricks. good time filler for the three-show section. CLAFLIN SISTERS-14 mins. in One-Character songs and imitations. A typical music hall act. Not an awfully strong act for the three-show class, but they managed to get by with a little applause. FOUR GOODFELLOW BROS.-9 mins.-Black Drop in 3-Spec. Set-Four boys, club jugglers, using illuminated clubs. Local act. Amateurs. When they get the act working right, the light affects will be very pretty. JOE EDMONDS-13 mins. in One-Eccentric comedian. Songs and stories. Will never reach the two-show section. A very ordinary three-show act. One song is good, but the monologue amounts to little. SWIFT & BARTON-14 mins.-C.D.F. in 3-Close in One for two minutes-Two men, music and comedy, one man working straight, one as comedian. A good musical comedy act for the three-show division. Music is good and comedy is not bad. FRANCIS GERARD-13 mins.-Gar. in 3-Herculean gymnast. Act is well known on the circuit. Opens with posing in the cabinet, and then does his balancing and lifting. A good act, but could be improved if he did not continually look at the audience for "kind applause." CARTMELL & HARRIS-Played in New Port Sunday night, and did not reach here in time to go on in their place. Went on before the dogs at 4.15, and made good. Boy and girl, neat singing and dancing act, doing 10 minutes in one. JEWELL'S MANIKINS-30 mins.-Spec. Full Stage. Second week. An excellent act. ITALIAN TRIO-12 mins. in One-Three men, vocalists, singing in Italian. A corking good act for three shows. On a par with the Three Dumonds, Melani Trio, etc. The applause hit of the show. LEWIS & RYAN-16 MINS.-C.D.F. in 3-In their well known sketch "Taking A Tonic." Well known on the circuit--always make good here, and were very welcome to-day, as most of the previous comedy had failed to make any impression on the audience. JAS. THORNTON-16 mins. in One-Monologue. Too well known for comment. Arrived in good condition--and made good, as usual. Was not a hit, for he used too much Hel--en and Hel--ena in his talk. MACARTE'S DOGS AND MONKEYS-14 mins.-C.D.F. in 3-A good, lively animal act. BIOGRAPH-20 mins.-The Train Robbery picture. COMMENT:-The three-show section, as a whole, is weak. The balance of the show reads well, but seemed to fall flat this afternoon. Thornton and Lewis & Ryan did about half as well as was expected, and most of the Monday audience saw the Manikins last week. In the re-arrangement the show may take a brace. H. A. DANIELS.
