PHILADELPHIA SHOW, JAN. 8TH 1906. -2- C.E.BARNS. KINGSLEY & LEWIS-2-In"Her Uncle's Niece." Three people and a property man. Character of a woman with a temper, a professor etc. with a mixup of identities. Rather a clever situation adapted from a sketch written by Mr. Lewis. The act is clean, and bright, and there were several situations that brought laughter and applause. There was a good strong hand at the close, after a furniture breaking scene. 20 mins. Fancy in 3. French window, a Balustrade. MADAME SLAPOFFSKI-2-Vocalist. A trained singer of the Italian school, with a voice that is seldom heard in vaudeville. Her selections were very good, each one of the three numbers were very liberally applauded. The Jewel song from Faust, at the close, won the house. She is not a beauty by any means, but she has a grand opera stage presence, and a voice that makes good any other shortcomings. 12 mins. Olio 1. FRANK & JEN LA TONA-2-Musical act. Man working tramp comedy, the girl straight. This looks like one of the big hits of the show. The selections were very good, and some of Miss LaTona's songs are new,and very bright. Every number was strongly applauded. LaTona's humor is A 1. Think there is no doubt about this being one of the star attractions of the bill. 25 mins. C.D.F. in 3. Olio 1. MAMIE REMINGTON & PICKS.-2-Miss Remington in a very chic red costume, the picks in several changes consisting of little Indians, ragamuffins, Buster Browns and etc. This act is very rapid and very pleasing, their various numbers were greeted with laughter and applause. At the close there were several recalls. The little people sang very sprightly, the dancing and acrobatic work varied the monotony. Holds this place on the bill acceptably. 13 mins. Spec. Drops in 1 & 1 1/2 HOUDINI-2-Started his work here by performing his usual jail breaking feat under the auspices of Capt. of Detectives Donaghy and in the presence of a hundred officials, magistrates, members of the press and etc. The feat was successfully performed, and was highly commended by everybody. It was a good introduction to his opening here to-day, and he received strong advance applause. His stage presence is all that could be desired, and has a frank way of addressing the audience that stamps him a man that can do things. The handcuffs that the citizens brought on the stage, he managed to extricate himself from with very little difficulty. Each one of his feats was liberally applauded, and the chest act, wherein he changes places with his wife in a locked trunk got a big hand. Houdini's work is absolutely unique and strong. There is no doubt about his drawing ability here, and he will be boomed to the limit. 22 mins. Pal. in 4. ELMER TENLY-2-Monologue in Irish character. All new stuff without being at all vulgar or suggestive. Got the crowd from the first, and held their interest to the finish, which was not as strong as it should have been, consquently did not get the encore that the whole act deserved. A better closing line or two would give him a recall. A natural born comedian, and valuable for this place on the bill.
