New York Criticism--Jan. 8th, 1906. NOTE: The show is good, but bad in spots. Without Murphy & Nichols, Clarice Vance and Phil & Nettie Peters, the show would have gone to pieces, as the balance of the acts are in the "also" class. Mme. Ilka Palmay, Julie Ring & Co. and Bert Levy should go on about 2.30, they are not strong enough for the place which I now have them. The show is the weakest I have had for many a day. A. R. CARRINGTON: Musician: Opens in two dressed as an army musician, carrying drum, Xylophone, camp stool attached to the back of his coat. His Xylophone playing is pretty fair. His drumming is excellent. He uses a lot of American flags, eagles, etc. for an effect. Act has a wee bit of novelty to it. Alright for an early place. 12 min. in 2 (can work in one)- 3 shows ELLIOTT & NEFF: Man and woman. Conversationalists and singers. Woman's voice is rather shrieky, but she manages to feed the man with some pretty fair material, which scores some few laughs. Man's voice is alright and he has some parodies which please. Act is alright for an early place. 13 min. in one- 3 shows RENNIER & GOURDIER: 2 young laides. Singers and dancers. Nicely costumed. Pleasing personality. Good voices and excellent dancers. Fully capable of going down in a better place. 11 min. in one--3 shows THREE ARMSTRONGS: Bicyclists. 2 working straight and one eccentric. Trick riding is excellent and they scored immensely on the comedy end. One of the boys sprained his ankle after the first performance, which necessitated cutting out the comedian. They suggested closing the act as they cannot do themselves justice. 14 min.-full stage-3 DEMORE & O'NEIDA: Man and woman. Japanese perch act. Strongly applauded throughout. 11 min. in one- 3 shows MME. ILKA PALMAY:(COUNTESS KINSKY) Famous Hungarian character actress. Opens the act with a little dialogue regarding her travels on a steamer. Gets a few laughs on some slang horse race expressions, -then gives various imitations of English, French and German vocalists. Uses a man in the act as a dummy, who makes an attempt of piano playing which is carried on by the orchestra. Changes her costume to that of an officer wearing tights and does an Hungarian dance. She has good stage presence and a pleasing voice. She appeals to the foreign element. At this afternoon's performance she did not go so well, but went much stronger to-night. 14 min.- full stage-2 he went very big. 18 min.-full stage- 2 shows W. H. MURPHY-NICHOLS & CO: Surprised to see how this act holds on. Was one continual laugh to-day from start to finish. I think it is safe to say,-the laughing hit of the show. 27 min.-open in one-close full stage- FORD & WILSON: Blackface Comedians. The talking does not amount to much. The singing and dancing is their stronghold. Although inclined to be a little bit rough, they negoiated this spot in fairly good shape. 13 min. in one- 2 shows HERMANY'S DOGS & CATS: In a pantomimic sketch:- "A Friend of Animals." Has qute a good troupe of dogs and cats. Well trained. Introducing a lot of new tricks and work perfect. The work of the dog "Meder", as the enchanted statue, is wonderful. Will try and arrange to give him a better place on the bill to show it to better advantage. 12 min.-full stage- 2 shows KINETOGRAPH: "Bicycle Thief." French chasing picture. Good comedy. "The Thrilling Rescue." Fair "The Country Courtship." Good comedy.
