New York Criticism-----Jan. 29th, 1906. DAVEY & PHILLIPS: Man and woman. Talking and singing comedy. Man portrays the character of a tramp, while the woman makes a fair soubrette with an ordinary voice. The talking is tiresome. The comedy is fair. The only merit to the act is the man's dancing and that is not saying much. The Jury wouldn't have it. 16 min.-full stage- 3 shows ALLEN & DALTON: 2 men. Blackface. Musical comedy. The instrumental part of the act is alright, and the comedy secures a few laughs. The act is alright for an early place. 12 min.-full stage- 3 shows KITTIE STEVENS: Character change artiste. Makes seven rapid changes of costume. Has a good idea, but unable to carry it out. Fell flat this afternoon, but at the price, the act is alright for an early place. 10 min.-full st.-3 THE PELOTS: Man and woman. Juvenile Jugglers. Woman makes a nice appearance. The juggling don't amount to anything. Received a big lot of laughs from the "apple-throwing" of the audience. 16 min.-full stage- 3 shows W. J. McDERMOTT: Monologuist and Parody Singer. Portrays a character of a tramp. This man's monologue is a lot of "junk." Not one laugh during all of it. Sings three songs and has only one good one. Closed the act with giving an imitation of Sousa, which the audience couldn't see this afternoon. 12 min. in one- 3 shows. NOTE:- The first five acts on the bill should all open the show at 1.30. ROSAIRE & DORETO: Second week. Some of their work was applauded. The laughs were very faint. One week would have been enough. 11 min.-full stage- 2 shows MME. SLAPOFFSKI: This woman has the same great voice as on her former appearance. One of the songs does not show the value of her voice and failed to please,-will change. She held her own with the other two and finished to big applause. 16 min. in one- 2 shows PAT ROONEY & MARION BENT: In their singing and dancing comedy: "Make Yourself at Home." First real "live" action on the bill that received any applause. Went very strong. 17 min. (Closed in one about 3 min.) 2 shows improved his act. He closed with very strong applause and took a couple of bows. The house was the biggest for Monday night for many weeks. Great numbers leaving after he was finished. ORPHEUS COMEDY FOUR: Vocalists. Good voices. Rather rough-house comedy, but just the sort of material our audience are now looking for. Laughed at throughout. Encored several times. 19 min. in one- 2 shows ROSE WENTWORTH & CO.: 2 men and a woman. Very good equestrian act. Both riders recognized strongly for their work. 10 min full stage- 2 shows KINETOGRAPH: "A Shave by Installments on the uneasy system." Good comedy "Moose Hunting in Canada." Quite interesting. "The Pea Shooters." Fair comedy "Trained Bears." Very interesting.
