217 (F. J. O'Connor) Boston Show, Week of Mar. 19, 1906 Overture, 8 min. Selections from Gounod's Opera "Faust". Dudley, Cheslyn & Burns, 3 shows, 19 min. open in 3, close in 1--Comedy and singing sketch. Just a filler for this house. Only fair vocalists and it is impossible to find the comedy McCrea & Pools, 3 shows, 12 min. full stage--Sharp shooters with the rifle. Excellent act on this order, which we will put way down the bill tonight. Hathaway & Walton, 3 shows, 8 min. in 1--There is a new woman with this team, and as a consequence, they did not go as well as usual. Still Hathaway's dancing always goes big here and today was no exception. Excellent 3-a-day act of this sort. Mullen & Correlli, 2 shows, 12 min. in 3--Two men, one working straight and the other in eccentric makeup, comedy acrobats; the former being one of the best tumblers we have had here for a long time, and the latter very funny indeed. Aroused lots of laughs. Joe Flynn, 2 shows, 15 min. in 1--"The Man Behind the Book". Somehow this man did not seem to go as well as on former occaions. I think his material is bordering so close to coarse that it is not appreciated. We will have to give him a lower spot tonight than he deserves. Cut "direct reference to lady in audience" -- "rubber neck watching girls in bathing". Mr. and Mrs. Edmonde, 2 shows, 24 min. full stage --"In Alaska". This sketch just falls short of being a good one. The man who takes the part of the soldier is a veritable wooden indian and his work hurts the sketch materially. Would not be particular about a repetition. Billy Single Clifford, 2 shows, 16 min. in 1--Fell horribly in this spot today, but claims he will improve considerably tonight. We have moved him up a couple of pegs but still he will have a good chance at them and if he doesn't improve, he will have to go up a few more. The Londons, 2 shows, 13 min. full stage--These people are clever enough and all their feats went very well today. Their work was marred by repeated misses, which lead me to believe they have had some new talent. I shall look up the matter. Murphy & Nichols, 2 shows, 27 min. in 1, close full stage--Well-known burlesque specialty, "From 'Zaza' to 'Uncle Tom'". In spite of the fact that we have had them here at least three times in a year and a half they scored big laughs from start to finish. The Dumonds, 3 shows, 14 min. in 1--Street musicians and vocalists. Well-known on the circuit. Went strong throughout and especially so the violin playing of one of the men. Martin Brothers, 3 shows, 12 min. in 1--Well-known xylophonists. Awfully poor spot today for these people, but it is about the only thing you can do. Comment:- Without Houdini this would be a very poor show indeed. Mr. and Mrs. Edmonde fall short in their sketch; Clifford decidedly flat; 4 Londons missing half of their tricks being compelled to give them up; Joe Flynn only going passably, making considerable of a dent in the audience of our 2-show division. We had the usual Houdini capacity audience. There is no question but what the record-breaking business will continue for the balance of the week.
