238 APRIL 9th, 1906. PHILADELPHIA SHOW. C.E. BARNS. ALLEN & DALTON, Comedy Musicians:- 18 min. in 3. 3 Shows. Very good opener. Their musical work is strong with the possible exception of the trombone and sazophone duo. The bells and the cornet and trombone duo won a good encore. The lines are weak, and not up to the standard of the musical or comedy work. Nevertheless, this is a good 3-a-day act. LE MAIRE & LE MAIRE, Comedians:- 13 min. in 1. 3 shows. These people were not wholly acceptable. Their rough and tumble comedy is of the crudest order, and their offenses in the matter of vulgarism were constant. One work Jew comedy and the other straight. They promise to change their act later and to cut out objectionable features. SAWADAS, Japanese Jugglers:- 21 min. F.S. 3 shows. Man and woman. This is a good 3-a-day act, nicely dressed and quite skilful, though there is nothing new or phenomenal in their work. The applause was generous. It is very neat and satisfactory for this place on the bill. EDWARD GRAY: The Tall Tale Teller:- 12 min. in 1. 3 shows. this man's work is very clever and the laughs were constant. There were some new stories and witticisms and best of all, they do not approach the vulgar. O.K. for this place on the bill. Might even go a little later. GENARO, BAILEY & CO, "A Cigarette Case"l- 20 min. F.S. close in 1. 2 shows. Advance applause. A very good sketch, full of action and bright lines. The interest was sustained throughout and the laughs and applause were frequent. The dancing in 1 at the close made a great hit, and there were five recalls. This is a splendid act for middle spot on the bill. TROVOLLO, Ventiloquil Comedian:-17 min. in 3, close in 1. 2 shows. this is one of the best acts in Vaudeville. The work is not only skilful and artistic, but the paraphenalia, (the hotel scene with the various characters) is a novelty. The bits are bright, and with one or two exceptions, neither hackneyed nor bordering on the vulgar. Each one of the features got a strong hand, particularly one with soldier and the Southern scene in the background. This last made a great hit. The work in 1 with the dog and manikin is very funny and got strong applause. This man would make good most anywhere on the bill. He has novel ideas and carries them out well. SEYMOUR & BILL, "The Mix and the Mixer":- 14 min. F.S. 2 shows. Man and woman, woman working straight, and the man as clown. These people start off well with a lot of roughhouse comedy that goes very well. They held the audience to the end, with big applause. Seymour's work is something on the Rice and Prevost order, and his stunts are very expert as athletic feats. The girl is very pretty, though not nearly as clever an acrobat. Nevertheless, she has a pleasing way and took very well. Up to the standard all right. EMMA CARUS, Comedy Prima Donna":- 20 min. in 1. Got big advance applause. @oman has a charming personality and is stunningly gowned. She sang three numbers, each one of which got a big hand. Songs were well selected and fetchingly rendered. Three encores. This act has made one of the strongest hits of any act in one of this class that we have had for a long time. Boys in the gallery whistled a low refrain to one of her songs, but instead of disconcerting her, it had quite the contrary effect and she encouraged it. She is a sure winner with this house. "CARLOTTA" the Marvel:-14 min. F.S. A few people left just before this act was announced, thinking that it was going to be a nerve-wrecking feature, but it did not prove so at all. It was highly interesting and went off like clockwork as such an act should. It is one of the best Vaudeville features of the spectacular kind that we have ever had, and will pull lots of people to the house this week. it is raining heavily outside. There were more cuts this week than for a month past, but there is no doubt about the telling strength of the bill as a whole.
