242 APRIL 16, 1906. PHILADELPHIA SHOW. C.E. BARNS. KLEIN & KLEIN, Eccentric Pantomimic Comedy:-13 min. F.S. 3 shows. Two men working clown. The comedy of this act is above the ordinary and the juggling is quite expert. Got a good many laughs and went off to good applause. Makes a very acceptable opener. WILSON & MAE, Refined Comedy, Conversational & Singing Duo:- 15 min. in 1. 3 shows. Man and woman, both working straight. Their singing is only fair, and their lines are not at all up to the standard. They get by, however, with this good-natured Holiday crowd. Got a small hand t the close and left no particular impression. Following such a good opener, they are at a disadvantage. MLLE MABEL and HER TRAINED ANIMALS:- 15 min. F.S. 3 shows. This act has been very much improved since the try-out here a couple of months ago. The little girl creates quite a favorable impression. She is pretty and bright. The animals acts are not so expert as many we have seen here, but the little girl has a very charming personality is absolutely at home with her pets. Moreover, her dogs, monkeys, etc, seem to have been trained through kindness rather than with the whip. There was frequent applause and a very good hand at the close. For the 3-a-day section this is a "find",--and moreover, has a future. GARRITY SISTERS, Songs and Dances:- 11 min. in 1. 3 shows. Two quite pretty girls in very fetching costumes. Their singing is fairly good, their dancing better. Each one of their numbers got a good hand. They closed with a dancing novelty which won the gallery strong. CHALK SAUNDERS, Crayon Artist:-12 min. in 1. 3 shows. this is one of the best acts of its kind. Saunders has the air of a man who can do things, and he certainly does them without any flourishes or ostentations. His talk is free, to the point, and decidedly helps the act. Each one of his drawings got applause and at the close got quite an ovation which was continued until he came out and bowed for the second time. HOCH, ELTON & CO, in, "Mlle Ricci":-21 min. F.S. 2 shows. With the Holiday crowd, this went very well. The action of the play is swift and the laughs were quite frequent. The theme is rather suggestive,- too much so for this house, but nothing in it could be cut without cutting the whole thing. There was a good hand at the finish. Regard it as O.K. for this place on the bill. Hoch and Elton's work is much better than that of Ella Grover, who lacks personality. LEW HAWKINS, "The Chesterfield of Minstrelsy":- 14 min. in 1. 2 shows. Got considerable advance applause. He brought on a new line of stuff which went splendidly with our Holiday crowd. Each one of his songs got a good hand and he was recalled. His strong finish showed that the audience appreciated the fact that Lew has abandoned his old stuff and is giving us a new line, much better and thoroughly O.K. There was a verse on the President's daughter which was laudatory and although any reference to Miss Roosevelt KINETOGRAPH: LIFE OF AN AMERICAN POLICEMAN:-Not particularly interesting, as it promises something that might be far better. PIERROT'S REVENGE:-A French series in the fair to good comedy class. FROM CHRISTIANA TO NORTH CAPE:- Travelling pictures which take very well with this house when so well done. HALLO, HALLOO GRINDER:- Rapid French series and O.K. as a closing number. GENERAL REMARKS;-This is, all told, a splendid bill without a single spot that could be called weak. There is abundant comedy and the three-show section is very well provided for. This being Easter Monday, the crowd is absolute capacity to the last standing room of space. It promises a continuation of great business this week.
