180 PHILADELPHIA SHOW, MAY 22ND'05. H. A. DANIELS. ALEXIS & SCHALL-3-Man and woman, singing and dancing, with a little talk and some contortion work. Good three-show act for an opener. Received scattered applause. 13 mins. Gar. in 3. ALTON & THELMA-[illegible]-3-Man and woman, vocalists. Very good three-show act. Every number was liberally applauded. Could go further down and make good. Should be booked for a return. 14 mins. in one. VINTON & CLAYTON-Horace Vinton and Edna Clayton, comedy sketch "Bill Casey, the Burglar." Good comedy sketch, especially good for three-show section. An unusually good act for this section. 19 mins. C.D. F. in 3. CUNNINGHAM & LORD-NH-3-Man and woman, singing and dancing act. All right for the price and three shows. Will probably be shifted up on the bill on account of Alton & Thelma. 9 mins. in one. TERLEY-GNR-2-"The Plastic Figure." A novelty for this house. His work received an unusual amount of applause for an act of this kind, some of the characters receiving applause before the makeup was complete. Very strong. Good for a return. 10 mins. Pal. in 3. LOUISE BREHANY-GYM-2-Vocalist. Appeared to be in good voice. Selections well chosen and she went as well as is possible for a straight singing act. 10 mins. in one. MACY & HALL-XHP-2-Carlaton Macy and Maude Hall offering for the second time in this house the sketch "A Timely Awakening." A well written sketch, well acted, by capable artists. A good act. 22 mins. C. D. F. in 3. JACK GARDNER-GXH-2-A blackface comedian, delivering songs and stories, with some parodies. Went very well in an easy spot, and could hold down a harder place. Good act. Frequent applause. Cut out last song about advertisements. 18 mins. in one. MR. & MRSL FREDERICK VOELKER-GHR-2-Mr. Voelker is a violinist of note. His wife assists on the piano. The violin used is said to be a Stradivarius and worth $3,000. Mr. Voelker has studied and taught abroad, and those who understand the intricacies of execution on the violin, say that he is a pastmaster in the handling of that instrument. However, that may be, he has a strong personal following here which makes him valuable for this house. He should make good on the circuit, if not placed too far down on the bill. 17 mins. Pal. in 5. McINTYRE & HEATH-SHR-2-Presenting "The Georgia Minstrels," by request. That's about all that need to be said. I'd like to be able to send a souvenir booklet to everyone who has laughed at this act in the past twenty years. 35 mins. Open in one. Garden in 5. (Over-page) ...in one. NOTE:-In the criticism last week I neglected to say that the Hilton-Hoefler Trio attempted to offer a comedy bicycle act. Their work improved during the week, and when it came time to close on Saturday, they were doing a good act. However, they need a whole lot of practice before they can be classed with the real live ones.
