78 New York Criticism--August 13th, 1906 BROOKS & VEDDER: Man and woman. Comedy sketch,-entitled:-"The New House Maid." This is one of Brooks Brothers. Woman in the act makes a pleasing appearance, has a fairly good voice and a pretty fair dancer. Material is good, containing quite a number of laughs. Act is thoroughly alright for an early place. 14 min.-full stage- 3 shows CARL COOKE: Colored Vocalist. works in eccentric character and makes a change of costume. Portrays the character of a colored minister. Introduced a stump speech, which is bad. Will have him eliminate the entire song. Gives impersonations of Ernest Hogan and Bert Williams, the latter being the best thing he does. Just about got by to-day. 19 min. in one- 3 shows MARSHALL & LORRAINE: Man and woman. In their comedy:-"Rag-time Liz, Queen of the Bowery." After the introduction, the woman portrays the character of the Bowery type and does it very nicely, and the man that of an actor. It is an act that appeals more to the feminine class. Act contains several laughs, although closed very tame, but it is alright for an early place. 20 min.-full stage-closed in one about 3 min-3 shows AUSTIN WALSH: This man's act was a novelty on his first appearance some months ago, but to-day he gave us nearly all of the old material, and, therefore, went good in spots. Prefer not to have it again. 14 min. in two-closed in one about 5 min. - 3 shows DONAT BEDINI: "The Clown and his Dog" Bedini is quite a clever acrobat and was greatly appreciated. Critics were rather amused at the dog following its master in the various acrobatic stunts. Result was that the act was the applause hit of the show up to this time. 8 min.-full st-3 ELSIE BOEHM: Young lady with a pleasing personality with quite a fresh voice. First two songs were descriptive numbers and somewhat similar to each other, therefore, the critics did not enthuse. They appreciated her voice on the first song, while the second went rather tame. Her voice has great volume, although not musical. Presume with different selections, she will go a little better. 11 min. in one- 3 shows Georgia-GARDNER & MADDERN-Joseph:- In the sketch:-"Too Many Darlings." Well known. Opened rather tame, but got some fairly good laughs in spots unto the finish. there is a little new business introduced, which helped some. Afraid before long this act will have to be shelved, as the audience gave me the impression that they were perfectly delighted when the curtain dropped. 26 min.-full stage- 2 shows are really remarkable and I fully believe,-as good as any wire act we have ever had. All of their work was strongly applauded. Excellent wire act. 8 min.-full stage KINETOGRAPH: "Carpet Beating" French film. Fairly good comedy "Two Brave Children" Good "Personal" An old film, but some parts of it new. Received some good laughs. Alright for a repeat
