80 TEMPLE THEATER, DETROIT, MICH., JULY 23. COMMENT-This bill starts rather poorly but finishes strong. J. H. Finn. ALEXIS & SCEALL-William Alexis is a good contortionist, and Miss Schall is a fairly good dancer. Act does very well to open with. 10 min. in 3. CLARK'S PONIES AND DOGS-This is not a good animal act, the principal reason being that the man in charge does not understand the business he is engaged in, and the animals appear to be strangers to him. 14 min. FS. MAY EVANS-Formerly soloist with the Navajo Girls. While Miss Evans is a fairly good whistler she did not appear to arouse much enthusiasm. 7 min. in one. SCHUBERT QUARTETTE-Two rather plain women and two men who just got by in this spot. Would not like to see the act again. 14 min. with plush. FRED LENNOX & CO.-Presenting George Ade's sketch "On His Uppers." This sketch just drips rich slang, and Mr. Lennox is very clever in passing it over the footlights. Miss Calvert as a feeder could be improved upon. The sketch made a hit. 24 min. FS. CARROLL JOHNSON-This well known minstrel and star of Irish melodrama was well received. He finishes with a recitation which received a great deal of applause. 21 min. in one. YE COLONIAL SEPTETTE-Without question the best musical act in vaudeville. With one exception the company is the same that appeared here on a former occasion. The feature of the act is the cornet solo by Charles Edwards, the new member of the company. 18 min. FS. Open and close in one. ELLIS-NOWLAN TRIO-This comedy acrobatic act is excellent and closed the bill in fine style. 7 min. FS. KINETOGRAPH-"The Dog Smugglers." This film is a very good one as the idea was nicely carried out.
