111 (Carl D. Lothrop). Boston Show, Week of Sept. 17, 1906. Thomas Meegan & Co; In a sketch "On the Q. T.", on at 1 o'clock, 22 min, full stage. This sketch makes a very good opening act for this house, as it is bright and lively. However, I could not recommend it for any spot much later than 7.30. It might get by for an early place, say number two or three, on the bill in the smaller houses, but I have my doubts. Shungopavi; On at 1.22, 18 min, opens in 1 4 min, 8 min in 2, closes 4 min in 1. He does rather an entertaining magic act, and his patter is quite interesting. He could hold down a better spot on the bill, if necessary. Dudley, Cheslyn & Burns; on at 1.38, 16 min, full stage. This is a very good 3-a-day act. Their singing is excellent and gets considerable applause. Miss Cheslyn's Irish song was a hit. Blanche Sharpe; on at 1.54, 9 min, in 1. This woman is O K at $50 or $60. She did very well on this place in the bill here. Sings three songs, making two changes of costume, closing in a regular army campaign uniform, in which she looks rather well. Brown, Harris & Brown; On at 2.03, 17 min full stage, 8 min close in 1, 25 min in all. This act will get by in good shape in almost any bill. Harry Brown makes many laughs, while the last costume that Miss Harris wears is a most gorgeous affair. Bertholdy's Cockatoos; On at 2.28, 12 min, full stage. As good a trained-bird act as we have ever seen. The finish of the birds riding on a bicycle around a wire loop over the audience was great. Werden & Gladdish; On at 2.56, 15 min, in 1. The best pictures I have ever seen in an illustrated song act. Gladdish sang three ballads at the afternoon performance. At night I had him cut one of them, and put in a march song, which made the act go very much better. An act with pictures as good as these boys have, with a better singer and songs with some snap to them would make the people stand up on their seats. Cressy & Dayne; On at 3.11, 28 min, full stage. They are playing "Bill Biffin's Baby". That tells the whole story. Nat Haines; On at 3.39, 15 min, in 1. Haines did very well in what is a very hard spot, for it takes an act very much out of the ordinary to follow Cressy's line of talk. Four Rianos; On at 3.54, 15 min, full stage. this act is still as good an acrobatic novelty act as can be asked for. Kinetograph, 4.28, 20 min. "Bryan's Reception in New York" has some local draft, as Boston's Mayor can be recognized in it. "The Snapshot Fiend"; a very fair comedy film. "Scenes on the River Ozu, Japan", a corking good travel picture; the colored effects are very fine. "New Magic", a comic film of little account. Charles and Jac Ahearn; On at 4.48, 17 min, full stage. This is a very, very good bicycle act for the money, and is good for an early spot on any bill. Comment: This show runs very smoothly, in fact, there had to be no change made from the original layout. It seems to please the public greatly. Cuts were as follows: Shungopavi, did 22 min at his first show. I had him cut enough talk out of the first part of his act to bring it down to 16 min. Nat Haines; cut, reference to perch in bird-cage; reference to skin crowded. 4 Rianos, about washing neck.
