123. Report on show, Keith's Theatre, Providence, R. I., Week of October 1, 1906. (Chas. Lovenberg, Mgr.) The bill this week in no sense compares with that of last week and is not nearly as good as the previous offerings this season. There is nothing in it that will attract particular attention and aside from the Cranes (principally because of the fact that Mr. Crane was formerly leading man of the Albee Stock Company and has a draft for that reason) there is nothing in the show to draw any money. Harry Botter & Co. Sketch, "A Matrimonial Blizzard", which is all right in the early 3-a-day section, but ought not be considered for anything more important. 20 min. full stage, 3 shows. Gertrude Bebest. Considered from a 3-a-day standpoint also, this girl is all right although I would say that I think she is quite a little over-paid. 12 min. in 1, 3 shows. Rialta. Fire and Mirror dancer. This woman was particularly handicapped by the fact that she lost her apparatus in Syracuse, week before last, and opened here with an entirely new set and a new man for an assistant, but after seeing the second performance and making all allowances, I still maintain that it is a very inferior act, not at all artistic and belongs essentially in the 3-a-day section where I have placed it. 12 min. full stage, 2 shows. Pucella & Orden. Two men who open with a little singing which is not at all good, but who wind up with some most excellent dancing which would class them among the best wooden shoe dancers in the profession. The act is very short and they have promised to try to lengthen it to-day. On a pinch (where it is necessary to use an act in one) they could with safety be used as late as 8.30. 8 min. in 1, 3 shows. Nessen, Hunter & Nessen. Club jugglers and hoop rollers, one man acting as comedian. In the 3-a-day standpoint this is a very good act. 10 min. full stage, 3 shows. Frederick & His Pony "DON." Very handsome pony introduced by a man with a very good personality and easily made good in this spot. The little horse does the usual business of answering questions as to day of week, time, numbers, etc, and was received with approbation. He opens with 3 or 4 min. in full stage (which could be done in 2) and then gives fully 10 min. in 1, 16 min. 3 shows. Orth & Fern. Comedian of this team is very good indeed, the other man amounts to nothing at all, and can't just see why he carries him. The act was well received and is all right at the price, considering salaries as they are to-day. 15 min. open in 3, close in 1, can open in 2, 2 shows. Mr. & Mrs. Adelmann. There is no question that Mr. Adelmann is a very fine xylophonist and Mrs. Adelmann a handsome woman, and a good accompanist to him, but it seems to me that whoever booked then should have discovered that they were playing "Poet & Peasant Overture" and "The American Patrol" which certainly ought to be supressed by this time as almost every Xylophonist in the business has hammered this in the years passed. The act simply went well and in no sense made a hit. 14 min. in 2, 2 shows. Ellis-Nowland Trio. Acrobatic comedy act. Up to this point this was about the hit of the show, going especially strong with the night audience. The act is too well known for description. 12 min. open full stage, close in 1, 2 shows. Hand of an Artist. Comedy trick picture, fairly good. New York Athletic Club Games, good. Voyage Around a Star, good comedy film.
