131. New York Criticism--October 8th, 1906--C. STEVENSON KIMBALL & LEWIS: Man making up as a clown. Doing some contortion work on tables and chairs, and woman who sings a couple of songs and does a little dancing. They work a little slow and the act drags considerably. If they would cut the act to 10 minutes and inject a little ginger, it would be more valuable. 15 min.-full st-3 CROTTY TRIO: Man, woman and girl. In a singing and dancing specialty, the feature of which is the dancing of the little girl. Just got by. 19 min. in one- 3 shows TOSSING AUSTINS: Juggling Comedian and Dancing Soubrette. Good three-show act. 19 min.-full stage- closed in one. NOTE:-Compelled to stretch their encore several minutes and even then it was not long enough to set for the following act. It seems to me, if they could finish the act with a rope-dance, it would be better. THOS. MEEGAN & CO: Comedy sketch:-"On the Q.T." Good three-show act and did very well in this spot. 24 min.-full stage- HALLEY & MEHAN: Blackface Comedians. Not good vocalists, but have a pretty fair line of talk and are good soft-shoe dancers, the comedian being a particularly good eccentric dancer and showed quite a number of new steps, which the audience seemed to recognize by liberal applause. Good three-show act. 13 min. in one "SUE" SMITH & PAUL FISHER: In a singing sketch:-"The Rose of Castile." The value of the act lies in the novelty of the costumes. Neither have particularly good voices and the act hardly got by a 3 o'clock. 16 min.-full stage- closed in one- 2 shows MARY DUPONT & CO: In the sketch:-"Left at the Post." The business and situations of the act is good and the lines funny. Secured many good strong laughs. 16 min.-full stage- 2 shows JOHNNIE JOHNS: "The Dixey Boy." Quite a little new material, both in his monologue and parodies, and the hit of the show up to this time. 12 min. in one- 2 shows ROYAL MUSICAL FIVE: This act did not seem to meet with the success that has been accorded it over the circuit, even though that they resorted to the lowering of a huge American Flag, while rendering their selection of National Airs. 20 min.-full stage- closed in one- 2 shows HARNDIN'S ELECTRICAL BALLET: "STARLIGHT" Described last week. While this is not the kind of an act to create enthusiasm, I think the audience were duly appreciative and this was evidenced by their remaining until the fall of the curtain. 6 min. KINETOGRAPH: "The Fakir and the Footpads" Did not see "Mephisto's Son" " " "
